Sony Ericsson Getting Back To Symbian

Sony Ericsson has been a long term supporter of the Symbian OS. After something of a hiatus in Symbian phones, Sony Ericsson will soon be back with the Satio, its first S60 platform phone. So how is Sony Ericsson gearing up to support Symbian developers? I talked to Christopher David, Head of Developer and Partner Engagement at Sony Ericsson.

Can anyone tell me to what extent S60 software that runs on Nokias will run on the Satio? E.g. widgets, ovi maps etc but also 3rd party software such as quake, google maps for s60 and so on?

Is there any way around any artificial limitations (e.g. if the software would run from an API/OS point of view but is deliberately limited by the device reporting it's a Satio rather than NSeries for example).

Also just to mention unregistered comments aren't allowed on this article which is not the norm for AAS and the link to this story on the front page of AAS is broken.

All Symbian phones are binary compatible, and most applications should run fine. There is a test suite that is run to ensure this.

There are some APIs that Nokia provides that are not official, and that may not work on Satio. Also, an application SIS file can specify dependency on a vendor platform, such as Nokia. This is common with Nokia's own applications, but very rare in 3rd party ones.
