n81 updating

i just updated my 3 hour old n81 8gb! from v10 to v11 it all went sweet right up until it restarted! it asked for pin number, ok entered it, then up comes a message saying 'phone start up failed contact retailer' GRRRRRRRRR so i took battery out for abit, nowt changed, done a hard reset NOTHING! took the sim out it started up fine in offline mode for a few seconds, then where it said o2 before it was flashing locked! now no matter what i try it gets half way through the nokia hands and up comes the message (even the hands freeze up!) what can i do? it wont reconize on the PC so i cant reinstall, i got it off ebay today, it was fine until the update i done,

can i take it to a service centre and will they charge me loads for the pleasure?

or should i send it in to nokia the free service centre as i done that before with a 6280 that went duff after a update...

damm nokias! rant over

well after spending 4hours in town yesterday and a hour in the nokia service centre they couldnt fix the n81, they said they were going to open it up but i reakon they lied and tried what i did

neway this is what i done and this is what i found out so far!

it seems new nokias when updated are not totally reflashed, some data remains ie. the operator shizznizz live VODAFONE LIVE! crap stays, numbers some others things,

well after the 'phone start up failed contact retailer' stage i have beaten it so far enough to satisfy my needs (seems ok bar the VODAFONE LIVE! crap)

i tried a different sim to my o2 one a virgin one without a code and after turning it on i keept pushing the left soft key and it got into the phone as normal (no message) BUT it wouldnt stay on the standby screen only the main menu push red and straight back into the menu, neways now i had it at this stage i could plug it into the PC and try updater again (stupid i no) to reinstall the software V11.0.0.45 (i think) well that worked untill phone started up again and same message appeared so i tried NSS and went back to VODAFONE code and that wouldnt do anything as it said v11 is newest ect try searching again.. neways went to town nowt after 5 hours, on way home i figured it was something to do with the active standby, turned that off would go on the main screen then, i then was messing about and tried the welcome bit (well the phone to me was a day old ) and that wouldnt work so messing around again i tried FACTORY RESET

BINGO IF YOU GO THROUGH WHAT I WENT THROUGH FACTORY RESET IT AND AWAIT NOKIA BRINGING OUT A WAY OF DEBRANDING THE N81-8GB!!

heres a link to my findings

link saying about new nokias not begin easy to debrand
http://www.cellomania.com/wp/?p=147

there are links online saying people have debranded there n81 8gb but to me there lying as i havent done it or no/spoke to any one that has

I've been thinking about getting this phone for christmas then i saw quite a few posts with people having the Public Liability Quote problem as you did iwh the phone.

Just wanted to say thanks because i now believe that i can get it because even if this happens then I can just factory settings it back to normal, so how did you find the phone after prolonged usage? was it still a good solid phone?

Thanks

yea magic i just signed in this forum again after soooo long and seen this on the main page,

i still have my n81 i have had it since jan 08, best fone i have ever had! i never keept a phone for so long! people call it a brick then i show them what it does and there like WOW WTF i want one! its still holding its value (well i paid 220 in feb 08 and its still going for 100 on ebay all day long)

i been after a n85 for a while now bidded on a few on ebay but i aint paying 350 quid for a fone no matter how much i want it, so until i get a cheaper n85 the n81 is staying! i have dropped it (screen fine), i work in building so its been full of dust many times (cleaned now and then and still fine) i have dropped it in the bath (funny at first - hour later still fine!)

music player ummm cant fault it camera does me proud for 2mp, basically you can tell i just love the phone, if the n85 wasnt out i wouldnt even think of changing it yet! n96 no thanks!

Follow up to updating

I have finally just mustered up the courage to update our N81 8G

we have and still use an N70, N73, two N95's, and N85 (although i havent changed any settings on the N85)

I have changed the product codes in all of these (N85 excepted)- the NSS software is excellent. They were either bought on O2 or Orange contracts and have been changed and upgraded as unlocked Scandinavian versions. Feel free to ask if you want to know the codes I used - we needed Finnish language sets.

I have read so many problems on doing this with the N81 and they are ALL real.

Firstly the hard reset done by holding down the Green, 3, and * buttons together with the on/off button requires the dexterity of an octupus! You MUST continue to hold these for a good 25-30 secs for this to work. I had the usual refer to supplier messsages on trying to reboot otherwise

One of the reasons i did the upgrade was in the hope that the phone memory would clear itself. Despite deleting virtually everything it still got to the point it would just not operate. The upgrade has not freed up any more memory!!!

I CANT work this out -- please help.

Finally it has become the only Nokia phone i've ever used that does not respond to *#0000# (shows the installed software version) and the menu shortcut keys have gone and there is no option to select them in the tools menu, the keys are just dead?

Oh if your interested the Scandinavian languages are there but the phone says not enough memory to switch to them!!!!!!

!!!Solved!!!

I've been spending more time on this and now have the answer; By doing a Key Press reset *#7370#. This is NOT the same as pressing 3, green button (send/call), and *. I did both one after the other.

It will wipe out all the phones resident memory messages, address book, etc. Do a back up to a computer.

All my problems - lost function keys, memory, and even Scandinavian language sets now work as if it is a new phone!

The phone was very very slow each time an application was used for the first time - almost as though it is loading a program, works fine after that. Even the *#0000# works (using V21.0.010)

Restored my faith in N series Nokia's

If this phone had a better camera it really would be top draw.
