Numbers appearing in top right of screen during menu navigation

Hi,

I assume everyone else sees a number briefly flash in the top-right of the screen as they navigate through menus and launch or close applications? What do the numbers mean?

They don't seem to relate to free memory, as the numbers are alway less than 12.00 and I have 52MB free according to task manager.

If I close and re-open the same menu options or apps, the number is different each time.

More interested than concerned. I hate the unknown!

Dez

No, it's just you, there's something VERY wrong. What firmware are you on?

It's done it on both V20 (T-Mobile UK) and V21 (British Isles Red).
The handset itself works perfectly so I am not worried - just curious!

I wonder if it's coming from Handy Taskman app which I have installed? (But HT never did that with 3rd edition handsets).

The same is happening to me!
I just made a reset, and then restored my complete backup...
I need to know what those numbers means... performance seems good but I want to know where they come from...

Any clues?

I posted the same problem a while back...

http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum...ad.php?t=82741

I've seen some demo videos on youtube etc where the phones are doing it.
Must be software causing it - there seems to be a lot of people running Handy 'X' that have the problem - though mine is now on v21 and has Handy Shell and Handy weather installed, and it's ok atm.
What I do see though is like a red dot - almost like a 'record' button.
Maybe it's a theme problem?

Very strange....

well... I've had handy shell installed, then i've uninstalled... and everything was ok...
then I've formatted and restored a backup...

That might be the reason of that...
Now I will try to reinstall and uninstall it again...
I will let you know

Tried to install handy shell and then uninstall... nothing to do, those numbers still pop up in the upper right corner...
it seems something for developpers or producers...
What to do now?

Whilst I started this thread, I don't think we should be alarmed. I don't think anyone is experiencing problems in performance or stability, so don't panic.

If someone finds out the meaning, post details in this thread, otherwise enjoy using what's probably the best handset Nokia have so far released bar none!

P.S. I have started a thread in the Nokia Community forums, maybe one of the Nokia guys can clear up this mystery.

thank you dez for your words, but i need to know what's goin on my cell phone! ;-)
I've experienced some slowing down of the phone, for example this morning when alarm rung, i couldn't stop with usual button, and it keep sounding...
maybe it wasn't depending on the misterious numbers...
anyway I would like to "know". I'll try to workaround on it...
and thank you for your post on official nokia forum.
let's hope to know something soon...

I received the following reply on the Nokia forum...

My understanding of the response from wizard_hu is that the 'numbers' are part of a diagnostics function that is automatically enabled when the user has installed some app (e.g. a self signed app using a OPDA developer cert, etc). This is certainly possible in my case as I have several such apps installed. I might have a look for the file he mentions using X-Plore.

Edit 14:51pm - I see the file mentioned but the C: drive is read-only and X-Plore cannot delete it.

Can we have a show of hands... for those who are seeing the numbers, do they have any self-signed apps or beta/developer editions of apps installed?

Edit 15:05pm - I have been advised that self-signed certificates them selves will not trigger the numbers pop-up, but that some developer may have been sloppy and left diagnostics mode enabled in their published app. Is it worth some the affected users listed which apps they have installed?

good to know it dez,
I've also installed applications signed by miself, or beta applications...
anyway I've seen the number after a hard reset and a complete backup restore and not after an installation, maybe in my case that has been the problem...
Anyway i simply don't like this number, so i tried to delete the file ErrRD with no success... How can I change its attribute?

we have some similar application, but in my case nothing recently installed...
so (in my case) as I told before it must have been the reset...

I think the only way to get rid of this file would be a format of internal memory WITHOUT restoring your backup. (Although you could Synchronise contacts etc safely before and after the format).

The guys on Nokia Communities say it's not going to cause any issues if left as is - except that if you try to install another app with the same misconfigured debug mode, the new app installation may fail with "Update failed" as it will try to create the already existing file in C:\resource\.

I am tempted to leave this problem for a very rainy day - the sun is shining in Scotland and it's now officially the weekend for me!

ok dez,
I'll try to uninstall latest application (as suggested by nokia guy), and then I'll go for a reset without restoring my backup, but...
how can i get rid of applications installed on my external memory? Do I have to fomat external memory too (before the reset)?
after a reset, my phone will find those applications on the memory and it will try to restore (maybe causing a corruption, or maybe)... It has happened last time, the only applications i didn't find after the restore has been smatphoneware ones (best reminder and best profile), and some others...
thanks for youe support, I hope my english is clear enough... ;-)
