Show GPS Info - Location Tagging

Has anyone noticed that location tagging of photos on the N97 does not work well? I don't mean that the location accuracy is poor, I mean it hardly ever actually tags a location?

Even with my replacement phone which gets fast, accurate and consistent GPS locks in all mapping applications, I get a photo location tagged for one in ten photos taken, even outdoors.

When taking a photo (on the main camera) a pushpin icon appears to show you whether the GPS location is known or a crossed out pushpin to indicate that it is searching. Even when I wait for the pushpin icon to indicate that the location is known, most of the photos do not get tagged.

Obviously the setting "Show GPS info" is set to "On".

I recently went to Crich Tramway Museum and snapped away all day. Almost all of the photos were taken outdoors and of the thirty-four photos that I selected for my gallery not a single one had a location tag. Several times throughout the day I checked that "Show GPS info" was on just to make sure it wasn't switching itself off. This isn't the first time I've thought "My N95-1 handled this better".

I hope it's a software problem that will be fixed in v2...

Have you tried installing the latest Ovi Maps Beta form Beta Labs? Some people are reporting improved GPS lock and response times. Can't say I've noticed a problem myself, but worth a go

I doubt that OVI Maps has anything to do with photo location tagging but to answer your question, yes I do have the latest beta of OVI Maps installed and v12 firmware.

When you say "Can't say I've noticed a problem myself", do you mean you have not noticed whether your photos are location tagged or not, or do you mean that they do get a location tag consistently?

The reason I suggested Ovi Maps is that many people who claimed to be having issues with GPS lock reported improvements after installing this beta. The new Maps may install improved GPS drivers which would likely benefit any other GPS reliant function on the device.

When I say that I haven't noticed the problem, I simply mean I don't take a vast amount of pictures, but those I have, do get geo-tagged accordingly. But I've barely used the camera yet, so "can't say I've noticed a problem myself"

Interesting comparison of the 3GS and N97 cameras here:

http://thenokiablog.com/2009/08/26/n...ne-3gs-photos/

From the article:

"Geotagging is turned on for both devices. The iPhone 3GS successfully geotagged all 8 photos while the Nokia N97 was only able to geotag 2 of the 8 photos. You know what else is surprising? The SIM card was in the Nokia N97, while the iPhone was in offline mode. A possible explanantion is that the GPS signal on the Nokia N97 is weak as discussed on Nokia’s forums."

How (not) to get your photos GPS location tagged

After ten minutes testing I conclude:
  • Photos are not GPS tagged if the camera application is closed before the position is written to exif
  • Photos are not GPS tagged if the location is not known at the time that the picture is taken
  • Photos are not GPS tagged if the GPS location is lost within five seconds of taking the picture
  • Photos are GPS tagged if you are very lucky!
This is not how the feature is documented and nowhere near as reliable as the N95 Location Tagger Nokia Beta Labs app.

I use Picasa and all my N95 galleries have (Google) maps pinpointing most photos' locations. The two galleries I have created
from my N97 do not have a single location tag.

The only way I can get a photo tagged is to ensure the camera knows the GPS location (pushpin icon) before taking the photo
and then be very careful not to obstruct the satellite signal until the photo is fully processed and saved to memory, then I wait
a few more seconds before closing the camera. What a faff!

AND...yes, more complaining...there's no way to know if an image is GPS tagged without loading the photo viewer, go into
Captured, select the photo, press Options, scroll down, press Details, scroll down, see if the Location field is populated. What
a faff faff!

On the positive side, the photos are great!

Just to add after my previous comments here, I tested this feature out on Sunday and was in a wide open space in the middle of the Suffolk countryside and had similar issues with very random tagging. in the main, it failed to tag more often than it succeded.

A fix for v20, I hope.
