Internal memory management

What do you think is the optimum internal memory configuration for the phone? Someone can go and install all applications on the D drive, however space is reduced accoringly on C (not to mention that some apps force C installation). Is there any trick to preserve inernal memory so as to be available for running applications? Can for example the contacts, SMSs, emails, etc be stored on D drive? Are there any tools that can "clean" drive C, and if so what should be done? Any ideas? Thanks
