Recorder

The built in recorder on the Mini has three settings. The "high" quality is far and away the best, and it would be great if it wasn't made unusable because of its disproportionate amplification of very high frequencies.

Has anyone found an answer to this??

Is that during playback on the N97 Mini or a PC or both?

Thanks Mathew, it's on the Mini.

I don't have a need for transfer of "sound clips" to the PC at present so haven't checked. I'm just thinkng of using it as a simple "digital tape recorder". I hear something and want to play that back to someone else, or to make a voice note or ....

In that case you need to determine whether the problem is with the recording or the playback.

Pick one of the audio clips that sounds bad and transfer it to your PC, then play it there.

If it sounds bad on the PC then we'll know that it is a recording problem.

The high quality audio clips I've made sound bad on the PC too.

High quality clips are: MP4 and get played on the PC on the Nokia thingummy (horrible sybillant "S"s. The Standard clips are WAV and plays in Windows Media Player. The other is for MMS (tiny file size) shame it's only playable in the Nokia thingummy.

It's just a shame that the high quality doesn't "work" (or that there is no control over tone etc in the Recorder app).

Ok, so the problem is with the recording.

The next thing to check is whether it's the mic or the recording codec. Try doing a high-quality recording while using a good quality wired mic or bluetooth headset instead of the built-in mic.

True, but I don't have spare mike etc and my BT headset is old and broken.

Are there's any software issues that I could test/address/substitute?

My instinct is that there's nothing wrong with the mike as it picks up all the sound fine with no distortion as such. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with the recording function as it records fine and with no issues in lower "hi-fi". The prob is the frequency balance is way off in hi-fi mode With a GEQ it would be the twist of a knob (in all alalogue hi-fi equipment since the seventies) but with modern digital BS ..... I have no idea! One step forward one mile backward.
