The 5800 and 5530 get firmware updates

Both the Nokia 5800 and 5530 just got over the air firmware updates, to v51.0.066 and v31.0.005 respectively. Both phones have full User Data Preservation, of course (as have almost all other Symbian-powered phones since the end of 2008), but the usual backups 'just in case' wouldn't go amiss. Check for the updates for your phone using *#0000# on the homescreen and then 'check for updates'. Improvements include browser and music player updates, plus the usual minor bug fixes.

Read on in the full article.

The commitment by Nokia to this ageing device has been amazing. As a user I didn't really feel that it needed an update, but this is incredible.

Hey Steve, since you have good contacts with Nokia folks, can u pls pass on the msg to them that we Nokia 5800 USA ustomers r still waiting for v50, let alone v51.
My product code: 0577454 JQ07r1P

Also, Nokia USA website shows that the latest version for my product code is 31.2.101, which is not true, as i have got 40.2.005 on my phone, which i installed via ovi suite. So their support page is also broken.

Hope you pass on this message to the right people.

Thanks.

hary536, forget about Nokia's support. Change your product code and enjoy the latest FW

Nothing to do with Nokia USA - its down to carrier variants of the firmwares. Its generally rare for any operator customised variant to have the latest firmware updates available until months after the vanilla release.

Same updates are available for the 5230 as well - mine is on v21.0.004.

At some point in this life I will understand the Symbian version numbering. Then again, maybe I won't.

I find it very telling that a mid-end phone like the 5800 is being updated (very) regularly. It's about 1.5 years old and already had 4 'grand' FW releases and several small ones in between (like this v51). Last time I used a friend's 5800 with v41 it was miles ahead of my phone in responsiveness.

Which brings me to my phone, the N97. The so-called flagship phone still has some major bugs that have been there since launch. I did expect Nokia to release a v30-FW for this phone around June/July (adhering the normal 6-month cycle), but instead we got a v22 that didn't actually add much. The only real addition was Maps v3.3 in the FW, but Maps 3.4 was already out so you still lost the C:-space.

Don't get me wrong, I actually still love my N97 despite it's obvious flaws. But the support it has gotten from Nokia leaves me questioning about later phones... Why do they support the mid-end phones more than the high-end?

@darkjeric: the N97 firmware updates have been more or less synced on seasons, versus a simple "when they are ready." And as you noted, the N97 received an update to v22 a month ago, so it is in no means unsupported. After the N8 comes out maybe, but probably not until S^3 is more firmly entrenched.

the 5800 has seen the level of support/firmware attention it has because it (like the E71) was a worldwide best seller in several markets and continues to do well despite the distilling of some of its features to other models. In time, it will be EOL (again, the N8 just might be its death note), but until then, this is an excellent way for Nokia to show how they support devices, how seamless updating devices can be compared to other top sellers, and a chance to further stroke folks to update when the device is EOL'd.

Ya, but my phone is not carrier branded. IT's unlocked unbranded device. Nokia 5800 was not sold branded here in US. So Nokia is entirely responsible here for the FW updates, which is not happening.

True. My Nokia 5800 is also not tied to a carrier. I just can't figure out how their strategies in the United States and as such, Nokia suck here. Other Nokia 5800 XpressMusic NAM variants already have v50.2.005 firmware. Mine is RM-428 and still stuck with v40.2.005 firmware. When can we get a load of, at least, v50.2.005 since I am interested to see web browsing features similar to Nokia N8?

@unregistered Yea, I got a NAM Rm-428 too. I noticed majority of the NAM v50 firmware are in latin America. Is nokia racist?

Indeed. Another RM-428, 0577454 user here. It's certainly an unlocked phone, for the US.

My only guess is that there are bugs in the GSM handling in how they interact with the US networks. Otherwise, it seems like we should at least have v50. Nokia was rather consistent in giving this variant firmware updates about a month after the UK release, and it's been months now without it. v40.2.005 is running rather well, though it'd be nice to get the updates. I did send a tweet to @NokiaCareUS, though haven't heard back yet.

5800 NAM firmware

hi, I have a 5800 NAM 0577454, I decided not to wait anymore on firware updates for this product code because it takes forever... so I just changed the product code to the 5800 NAM LTA (18) and then updated OTA. I now have v50 on my 5800. Changing the product code was not difficult at all, i just followed the instuctions on the internet (Daily Mobile i think). My phone works just find with US 3G network.

That may be, but the N97 didn't do so bad on the market too. And I still think that if you release a flagship phone, it has to be your major strive to make that the top-tier of your entire product line. Firmware development is one of those strives. Yes, it does receive firmware updates, but it takes about 6 months between each (vs. 4 months for the 5800) and most of these firmware upgrades aren't such a big deal. Remember that v11 came out just weeks after launch to make the darn thing a bit usable. v12 was ushered in to fix even more bugs that shouldn't have been there in the first place. The first usable firmware was v20, released in October/November 2009. And if you ask me, I don't see that much difference between v20 and the latest v22. Most bugs are still present, and the only real addition of v22 was the inclusion of Ovi Maps 3.3 in the firmware, making some extra C:-space available. However, at the time they released this firmware, Maps 3.4 was already launched too. So again, useless...

I'm pretty much convinced that the N8 and S^3 will be the EOL for the 5800, the 5530, but also the N97. Once Nokia switches to S^3, I don't see them supporting S^1 much longer. It's just a shame if you ask me, the N97 could be so much more even with it's current hardware (and flaws)...
