5230 TTFF (time to first fix) of several minutes

Hiya

A friend of mine has just got a 5230 on Vodafone PayG for 80 with free 3g data for 6 months (absolute bargain).

Unfortunately when he tries to use the GPS (one of the main selling points on this phone) it's just not getting a fix.

He has all methods except external bluetooth GPS enabled.

I've checked the a-gps server settings and they seem correct according to this forum post:

http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/...ion/m-p/606094

His 3g data is working fine for downloads etc. I suppose it's possible that vodafone are somehow blocking the agps download but that does seem a bit stupid since they sold him the phone.

When I go into the GPS status it takes a relatively short while to pick up four satellites but it still says "waiting for position".

We also get 0 satellites when inside; my fairly old (3 years?) cheapo bluetooth gps works fine in the same room.

A long TTFF I could understand if agps wasn't enabled but it seems overlong even if it were not, and I'm bothered about the sensitivity of the device that it shows 0 satellites where other older units show 3 or 4.

What's other people's experiences of the 5230 for GPS? I've seen people talking about 13-second TTFF for the 5800, and I'd have hoped the 5230 would be similar.

Thanks!

As I don't have a 5230 , just some general remarks :
With older phones , sometimes it was impossible to get a fix , due to a non-specified software reason , e.g. after a software-update . The solution is : right away start the GPS after a reboot , soft reset (*#7780# , wipes personal settings) or hard reset (*#7370# , wipes all personal data from C: disk) . Open other Apps only after .
The early N97 had a hardware issue : antenna interferences . In such a case warranty is the solution . However this was taking some time ...
BTW : did you try to connect your old BT GPS ?
