Series 30 and Series 40 are on Nokia proprietary OS, not Symbian in any form or shape. Series 40 does support MIDP Java, though.

Nokia's Symbian OS UI's are Series 60, Series 80 and Series 90.

UIQ is a Symbian OS UI from UIQ Technologies AB, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Symbian Ltd. UIQ is used by a couple of Sony Ericsson and Motorola phones, and also licensed by companies like BenQ and Arima, but they have no phones on the market yet.

Ok, never mind, Nokia claims this device won't be released. A shame...

I have a pay-as-you-go (the dreaded sony-ericsson T68i - sold to me by an unscrupulous friend for 20 quid). I tried to upgrade to the 6610 but found that it was too tinny and there was a hiss so I took it back.

In my search for a new phone, I've twigged onto the 6230. I just have a few questions:

a) Reception: What is your verdict? Crystal clear or otherwise? Will I have to place my hand on my forehead and swoon from the resulting headache if I have a longer conversation?

b) MP3: I've never owned an MP3 player and am wondering how many songs that would hold on average (the average song length being between 3-6 mins i think - it would be perfect for gym going if about 20 songs can be loaded).

c) Finicky keypad: Some of the other reviews I've read said that the D key is not the easiest to maneuver and the middle row of keys in are wiggly and unstable. What is your opinion on that?

d) 6230i: hmm, the question... to buy the 6230 now or wait to thrash the T68i on the rocks for the 6230i...

Many thanks for your help,
jane

hmm - just found this and thought it might be of interest to people who are looking at the 6230, if only for a heads up and maybe a response?

kind regards,
jane

Sometimes my nokia 6230 becomes too hot to touch after some hours of calling.

Thumbs up On the Nokia 6230

This phone rocks. I am replacing my own cheap Nokia (which, despite its cheapness, has charm and never causes alarm when I drop it) with the 6230. I bought the same phone for a friend and -- honestly -- I couldn't be happier with it.

The picture quality is as good as I need it to be, for a phone -- it's all just "fun", after all -- and every other feature I have dabbled with ranks as excellent to me. This phone has all I'll need for years and years to come, and it should, as it wasn't cheap. Over $400 U.S. (I bought it in the United Arab Emirates). It's a classy, timeless little wonder that I'll be able to use the world over.

I love the mp3 feature. A 512 MB card will hold all I need for songs. I haven't worked with the radio much, but did get reception on one station -- excellent. The calendar and notes section -- all brilliant. The automatic shortcuts are extremely practical. I hate scrolling for my most called numbers. Now you can program these into the keys and just hit a "2" etc. and dial. There are many useful features, including the time zone thing. When I plugged in the specific city I wanted, mine was not there, but the other main city in the same area was, and afterwards the phone remembers this location. Extremely helpful when you're an expat and don't want to call and wake someone at home up. Voice mail. Many, many useful features. The calendar is excellent. Great to be able to change the view to grid or list. I love the phone. Small. Not too heavy, but not feather light either (which I don't like, because I have a tendency then to lose my phone). Classic design, not a clunky thing like the 6600 which doesn't look professional and would very quickly become tiresome to me.

Anyone who buys the 6230 will love it.

Smile 6230 :)

my top 5 nokia phones

1.) nokia 9500 - (for obvious reasons) but it's got too many things i don't need
2.) nokia 6630 - it's got everything.. but its not yet "out" and if only it were smaller

3.) nokia 6230 - it's got everything except it's not symbian :( but... i got it anyway and i never thought i could smile up to my ears.

cheers

This wonderful piece of crap won't install .sis-files?

I'm going nuts trying to make it work with a bluetooth pen on my computer. "Unsupported file format". How annoying!

Are you trying to install .sis files on your 6230??? That's impossible, the 6230 is not a symbian device!

The advantages: You get a smaller size phone. You get an MP3 player and FM Radio built-in. You get USB connectivity for PCs.

The disadvantages: You get a much smaller display. You forego all the nice Series 60 applications.

That's about it.
