This is not a communicator

http://press.nokia.com/PR/200310/922404_5.html

If you look at this release they seem to be saying the comminicator will still be coming

Sure doesn't look like a communicator ... in fact it doesn't look like a phone either

Nokia 7700
But they say it has 'Word, Sheet, and Presentation Viewer; Word & Sheet converter'

Nokia does not categorize this as a Communicator. Communicators are business user phones.

This (7700) is for a media content (audio, video, web) consumer mainly.

Its so cool man!

I almost drop my jaw.

Wonder how are we going to hold it when making a call.

Better start saving for it now.

Well, it's got a 7000 range model number, which they usually use for their whiz-bang, show-off type devices, but I tend to agree with the above post: although this is based on S90, I don't think it's the new Communicator. They're clearly aiming it at the consumer, what with playing up the media aspects of the thing.

There's another big expo later this month, so I'd keep my eyes peeled for a new 9000-series device (or two?!?) to be announced then. Note that the Series 90 development spec includes the possibility of control via hardware keys as well as pen, which would clearly suggest to me that a keyboard-based device is on its way as well. In other words, a new 9000-class device!

Furthermore, in general networking PR pieces in the press, Nokia have expressed interest in integrating handheld devices with business networks, & also made noises about VOIP & 802.11 in general in the last year, so if I had to place a long-shot bet, I'd bet that the new Communicator has WiFi support as well as Bluetooth. That'd almost be a requirement for current business buyers actually, as both PalmOS & PocketPC PDAs can get it now, & Nokia needs the device to be competitive. Plus, with Nokia apparently making all their new higher-spec handsets EDGE-compatible, I'd look for that, too.

A couple of other points: The Register has mentioned that a Series 80 UI/Series 90 hybrid-type device is also likely in the future, as the Series 80 UI is designed for their top-end business machines, so I'd expect to see something like a revamped Series 80 front-end on Series 90 architecture. Also, the new Series 90 screen spec is for a 640x320x65k touchscreen, which would imply that these devices will have a squarer screen than the 92xx phones. Given that extra space, I wouldn't be surprised if in some ways, the new Communicator looks a bit like a Psion Series 5 in terms of form factor (but obviously much more powerful).

Finally, seeing that they seem to be sticking with MMCs for now, it may well be that we won't get SDIO slots in our Nokias this time around... :(

Anyway, that's my two cents. It'll be fun for me to look back at this post at the end of the month to see if I was right about any of the above! We'll see...

By the way, does this mean that Rafe has to set up a Series 90 section as well, now?!?

The future is finally looking quite promissing for us from Nokia. P900 and co. better watch their heels, the big Fins are catching up.

If Series 90 will support the next Communicator, that would be a lot nicer! Question is, when is this? I hope this takes place before March when I will be replacing my phone.

Keyboard shortcuts on Series 90 emulator !

Hi folks,

I have tried a little bit the Series 90 SDK (from http://www.forum.nokia.com/main/0,,034-261,00.html) and it has a beta emulator for Windows machines.

Guess what ? "Ctrl+C", "Ctrl+V", "Ctrl+P", etc., work on the Series 90
Emulator ! This may indicate that the next Communicator will have almost
the same GUI (menu names with shortcuts, etc), just with a real
keyboard... besides other hardware and software changes to address the
business users.

Other comments :

Sheet has 3 zoom levels from 15.3 to 9 rows visible using full screen
(with the default row height), while on the Nokia 92xx Communicator
Sheet has 6 zoom levels from 11.5 to 3.5 rows visible using full screen
(with the default row height).

Word and Sheet open MS-Word and Excel files after converting them. IMHO
the conversion is better than the one found on the 92xx Communicator
(without PC Suite).

The File Manager does not have many view options and it would be nice to
have a column view mode.

Calendar screen options do not include zoom, and there are just day and
week views...

As the Series 90 emulator is a beta version, maybe some lack of features
will be addressed on further versions of the Series 90. Well, I hope so.

But the worst feature IMHO, why only 3 command bar buttons ? Why not 4,
as the screen height in pixels (320) is a lot greater than the 92xx
Communicator (200), even after discarding the top and bottom areas ? These
3 buttons seem to tell me I should be almost blind...

From a Epoc programmer's point of view, it is good to see the dialog buttons
back to dialog windows (without CBA).

I also hope that the new Nokia 7700 and the new Communicator will have a
fast processor (approx. 200 MHz) do deal with large screen updates (and
more colours), as well as at least 8-16 MB of free operating RAM to give
more freedom for developing large apps.
