N95 firmware - it's a-been a-long time comin'

I've been mulling over an editorial looking forward to the (hopefully imminent) Nokia N95 firmware upgrade but was stopped in my tracks when Vaibhav Sharma, who has perfected telepathic theft, managed to raid my mind and get it all down for the world to read first(!) Kudos. Nokia, please take note of this list of things you need to fix and add. Users, enjoy - I wonder how many of these we'll see in the real world?

Read on in the full article.

Telepathic theft or not, you are both right. Nokia have now had three dummy runs at getting the firmware right since the last N95 update, the N95 8GB, the N95 N.A. version and now the N82. If these are all deemed to be release standard and as they use very similar hardware to the original N95 (RAM and battery excepted), what are they waiting for?

I can't believe that demand paging wasn't part of the original plan for the N95 classic. Nokia are obviously not stupid, so how else did they think the amount of RAM included would be sufficient for a multimedia computer? I think (hope) that they are just taking extra care to ensure the firmware update answers all our deepest desires!

Creating a new firmware for a new phone and updating an existing one are two different things. I assume Nokia needs some time to make sure the firmware does not only work with a clean install, but also with update scenarios (backup restore).

Nevertheless I think us early adopters of the original N95 deserve an update to N82 level!

There is a certain degree of irony to the plain N95 not having demand paging, while the N95 8Gb does have while also needing it less due to more physical RAM!

I notice the first complaint is about the keypress bug. The keypress bug has been fixed in 12.0.014 - you just need to change to an Asian product code to install it. (You also get a slightly different system font, but it's neither better nor worse, just different.) I've been using 12.0.014 for months and there is no downside to using it that I can see. Yesterday I noticed that the default bookmark for Yahoo in the browser is for Yahoo Asia..that's about it!

I'm on 12.0.014 but the keypress bug is still evident. It is much better then it was before, but it is in no way fixed on mine. When I was on 12.0.013 (I think) it would happen maybe one missed press in every 8, on 014 I would guess it is down to about 1 miss in every 15. Better, but still blooming annoying.

i had the pleasure of owning both the n93 and n93i
To this day i still believe the n93 was a prototype on sale(rubber to cover memory slot? No updates since the auto black and white night video recording "feature"? (Which is still hilarious to this day as no other model has this "feature") its not even listed as a compatible device on the ngage and music sites)

Nah! They (Nokia) are not interested about this issue. N95 is prototype for future phones like N95 8GB and N82 (like they did with N70 and N80). So stop whining now (irony).

I'd add one more bug that should be fixed. I hate the fact that the Log displays icons of cell phones, irrespective of what number, cell or landline, you called or received a call from. This is a pretty minor bug but it's incredibly annoying to me since I make a ridiculous amount of calls.

The latest version is V12, which has been out for months; this is about firmware in the future. No new firmware has been released yet.
