N80 Network Signal Poor

Is it me or do these handsets have a really sh*t signal strength, the reason I ask is I have just got my wife an N73 and the signal strength is fantastic!
In my home the signal seems weak on the N80 and I have to change rooms to get a good call.....not with this N73.....got 3g up and running and fast web browsing WTF!
Anyone got any advise on this? Do I send my handset back?

The signal strength on the N80 is generally poorer than on other handsets...I am afraid we have to live with it unless it can be fixed in a future update...which I doubt...

yep - mine too

never noticed it until I used my old phone for a few days (MSN works on it, can't believe 3 haven't got it working on this model as yet)

Surprised as its supposedly one of their super high spec models ...

Well, only another 9 months left with it ... hopefully the new version (n95?) is better ? although I am sorely tempted to consider a Sony E ... !

Yep, my N80 signal strength is awfull, it was the same on the N91. Sometimes just having my phone in my pocket will render it useless, when i pull it out it jumps to 2 bars, then i get a flood of texts and missed calls!! pathetic!! There no chance that a wifi signal could interfere with it is there??

Hmmm, I dont seem to have any problems with my signal strength... I reguarly compared to to 6230i the business nokia I have and it compares ok. No big differerences.

My problems lie elsewhere!

My N80 is definitely slightly worse than my 6230i
But compared to my son's SE w810i and my daughters SE k750i my N80 is absolutely rubbish in the signal strength department.

Fantastic at everything except reliable phone calls!!

I find signal strength is poor(er) inside buildings but generally OK outdoors.

However, and perhaps it's my imagination here, but when the keyboard slider is extended fully, I get an extra bar or 2 of signal compared to when the keyboard slider is closed. It's almost like an old telescopic FM arial on a radio.

personally, after spending $600 on a damn phone, i would expect it to be damn near perfect. as much as i absolutely LOVE my n80, i hate how theres so many flaws. its an amazing phone and all, but i wish they came and read our hopes about the phone first. when i read up on the phone and got all fascinated about the 3mp camera and stuff, i didnt expect a 2mp SE phone to have about 3 times the flash capability, and mine to not even work at night.

also kinda ridiculous how i have to have a desktop charger charging an extra battery 24 hours a day and having to switch back and forth through the two twice a day.

battery should be one of the most stellar components of this phone, especially considering that its a very businessy phone

and the one thing i loved about the n80 was the absolutely amazing screen resolution, so why downgrade the n95?

maybe nokia doesnt WANT to make a perfect phone...

cuz when somethings perfect, how can the company make a better product for me to drool over, crave and dish out more money for?

i've solved the riddle

Jerks.

hmm

My reception on the n80 is a joke wasn't on the 6280 on 3g or the k800i of which i swapped for the n80.

I do recall the same issue last time on a 6680 and i downloaded a program that enabled you to be locked on 2g whilst at home.

not sure what it was called any ideas

I guess that despite there history Threes good signal in most places is a bit of a saving grace ...

Its funny - this is THEE phone I really wanted ... and I am hoping that nokia realises that if you go for a phone of this quality you want it across the board.

Interested to read about the slideout amplification, is there any other way of amplifying the signal ?

I live in a fairly remote area and signal strength is always an issue.

With my 6630, also on three, the phone would constantly switch from the 3 to O2 network (they have some deal apparently) which led to many missed calls, dropouts and frustration.

I downloaded some software to lock the phone to GSM (which used the O2 network) and it worked alot better.

A few months ago I got the N80 on three and reception was completely terrible so I never bothered using it. To be honest I was happy with the 6630 anyway and only lured in with the wi-fi angle.

Eventually I flashed the N80 with generic firmware and locked it to GSM. It seems alot better now, reporting similar signal strength to the 6630. However the link between signal strength and the number of bars on the display seems tenuous at best!

I don't know if the change is down to updated firmware, the GSM lock or just better signal access but it seems better anyway!

The phone still looks better on paper than it is in real life though. Slower than the 6630 aargh

Switch provider.
Why ?
The N80's GSM-900 reception is (as has been pointed out) appallingly abysmal.
But its 1800 reception is absolutely solid, crystal clear.
So dump your O-2 and Vodafone accounts for a shiney new T-Mobile or Orange one.
I dumped my phone rather than my provider (locked in for another 8 months).
Onto a 6630 now - essentially a low res N80 (but faster ... same 220 MHz proc that doesn't have to run hi-res).
