Exclusive (teaser): Tour Round Nokia Test Labs

Along with a couple of other invited guests, I was privileged to get full access to Nokia's testing labs at Farnborough this morning. A teaser photo is below the break, but there's lots more to come, once I've digested and edited all the raw video and photos I took for All About Symbian. Watch this space!

Read on in the full article.

It's really not that amazing. Temperature occasionally drops below -40 in eastern and northern Finland during winter (and once in a decade or so in Espoo as well).

Yeah, I have to agree with the comment above, I've certainly been in weather as low as -30C, though that's quite rare and it seems to be getting rarer all the time.

Anyway, good to know that my Nokia will still be working in the Arctic Winter - unlike some devices from other manufacturers..... 8-)

Devices may work at -40C but the human body may have difficulty, it's very hard to breathe at those kinds of temperatures as it hurts and makes your lips freeze.

I think the chances of anyone actually using their phone at those temperatures or even taking it out of their pocket are about the same as Chergar winning next year's Grand National. :-)

In any case, great job to Steve getting the setup, I for one am *really* looking forward to seeing the rest of this series/post. It's not often we get a behind-the-scenes look at what brings us the phones we all complain about.

Yes, we use our phones at -40 degrees quite rarely, but that's the exact occasion when a _working_ phone can save our life.

True, good point. And it wouldn't have to work for very long either, just long enough to ask for help and say where you are.

Nice topic

Let it rip Steve. Looking forward to droptests, showertests and slightly more grown-up versions of Braniac testing ;^)

And uhhmmmm, were is the rest of those Nokia Express Media 5800 tests? Or are you already testing it's qwerty slider successor?

A college friend of mine works for Nokia and moved to Finland about 2 years ago. Apparently they get a free phone every 2 years and he got a N70 at that time.
He'd always been used to warm weather (we're both from Brazil) so he didn't know what to expect in his first winter there. Well, he may be a little biased, considering the company he works for, but he told me the only portable device that keeps working outdoors is his N70. His iPod and his Palm PDA would not resist the extreme cold temperatures.
