Worked fine... BUT ATTENTION!!!

after change of product code and NSU flashing the phone started fine. But, then I restored the backup of telefone memory from sd card and the phone was dead afterwords.

only this helped to reset:
while phone is switched off, press * and 3 and green button, keep pressed, switch on the phone an wait for the PIN to enter

so, use other backup prior changing product code.

This seems to be the valid language pack compilation. This list is from another Nokia forum, related to another Nokia Symbian Phone. I used EURO1 and it matched:

EURO1: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese
EURO2: English, French, German, Turkish, Dutch, Italian
EURO2: English, Czech, Slovakian, German, Polish, Hungarian
Scandinavia: English, Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Icelandic, Danish
Baltic: English, German, Estonian, Russian, Latvian, Lithuanian
Russia: English, German, Ukrainian, Russian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Hungarian
Balkans: English, German, Croatian, Slovenian, Serbian, Greek
Arabic: English, Arabic, French, Farsi, Urdu
Hebrew: English, Hebrew, Arabian, Russian, Romanian, Spanish
Africa: English, Portuguese, German, Italian, French

No garantees for the others.

Hi Ziffos and thread members.

Have to say this site is totally useful and I really appreciate all those that have put the effort in to create and sustain it. This is my first post, but I hope to help others in the future soon.
I currently have a Vodafone E51 Black with Product code 0552941, Software version 150.34.15 on a RM-244 Nokia E51 (225.04) and have tried to change the product code to one of the Euro 1,2,3 Black editions above using NSS.
The product code change works fine, but when I run NSU it finds no software update for the version I am using. I find this strange as when I change the prodcut code back to the Vodafone UK one, the NSU finds the software update and says it can reinstall the current version (which is the most up to date version available).

Am I doing something wrong as I want to get rid of the Vodafone software - the phone came without a SIM lock from Vodafone as I can install other UK sims fine from new.

A helping hand would really be appreciated.

Hi KVU and welcome to the Forum.
I am afraid that I may be giving you bad news as I believe that mobile phones with Vodafone software cannot change their product codes and therefore are unable to get rid of the "unsightly" branding. I believe that Orange branded phones have the same problem.
If I am wrong in this information then I hope that other forum members will tell us.
Sorry I was unable to help but good luck with the E51 as its a fantastic phone.

Thank you for your reply!
Well that sucks doesnt it?! You would have never thought that the firmware has been locked forever. Does that mean that any Nokia phone with Vodafone UK software is subject to the same issues? I see many people talk of their N95's etc. and I wonder if they have had the same issues.

I have Nokia E90's and E61i's in my business all on Vodafone Business so it would be interesting to know.

Thank you to anyone who replies!

Best wishes

Yes it certainly does "suck" and I am fairly sure that N95's are the same (have a look at http://www.n95users.com/forum/ as you may find discussions about it). As far as all other Nokia's on Vodafone I am afraid I cannot answer.
Regards

I don't think it's a case of the Vodafone FW being "locked", more that there simply hasn't been any firmware released to replace it. Changing the product code is only part of the process. This merely tells the updater to download firmware for different operator or region. Fact is, AFAIK, Nokia haven't issued any updates for the E51 so the updater has nothing to install, other than the version you already have.

Another observation is that unlike the N95 it would appear that the E51 has been dropped (or not taken up) by most retail outlets (e.g. it's no longer sold on O2 PAYG) and is mainly being sold as B2B. I ended up getting mine by mail order as there wasn't anywhere I could buy it over the counter. I guess that means there is little pressure for Nokia to publicly release updates via the NSU because of the limited distribution, and why pretty much every one ships with the Vodafone build. Hopefully that will soon change, but, knowing Nokia and it's support history with other E series, I wouldn't bank on it.

Not that that's such a big deal. Compared to their treatment of other phones, the Vodafone wrap is pretty thin anyway.

It only took me about 10 minutes to delete the preconfigured Access Points and Email accounts, uninstall the Vodafone Live apps, and reassign the key short-cuts and screen savers back to standard, so it now behaves like a standard Nokia. The only thing I can't seem to get rid of are the bookmarks in the browser.

Plus, with no later versions around, there are no bug or feature fixes to be had by forcing in other firmware. As far as I can tell, the only thing you are going to achieve by messing around with NSS etc. is to throw your 2 year EU warranty out of the window. That's a high price to pay for little gain!

Hello all!!!!

Just to clear up lots of misunderstanding that there seems to be above.

1) You can change a vodafone/orange branded phone to a non branded version of firmware. Change as per the instructions above at the top, and then when NSU says there is no firmware update available take the option of 'reinstalling' the firmware and you will get your debranded firmware.

2) This does NOT take away the SIM lock though - the SIM lock is a seperate lock and nothing to do with the firmware - you will still only be able to use a vodafone SIM for example.

3) When restoring a backup where you have changed your product code, never EVER under any circumstances restore the 'settings' part of the backup. This is what causes the phone to get screwed up and you have to use the hard reset trick.

(for example most vodafone firmware disables the VOIP phone sections of the firmware [and appropriate settings], and so cannot be restored onto a non branded firmware phone as the settings dont match up)

you can restore contacts, notes and calendar just fine though.

Hope this helps.
