Lightbulb April 12th

Come on, people, Nokia's announced April 12th will be a very important day to Symbian. With the new version of Qt (whereas it's a beta) and the launch of C7 Astound with some Symbian innovations, let's speculate!

I think they will release the PR2.0 PLUS (and I like this feature) the Nokia Pure font as default.

Very excited to see (thank goodness here in Brazil is a little late compared to GMT, so I'll get the news right when I wake up)!

BTW, weren't Rafe, Steve, Dave or Ewan called to attend the presentation??? Or maybe they are hiding something... hehehe

Hi bchliu!

Where can we get it from?

Thanks,
Matt.

Agreed.

I might just be being an idiot but I don't understand how we can download QT on the phone directly.

I mean I've worked out that if you don't have the QT files needed when downloading a QT application from the ovi store then it automatically downloads the files, but how can we make sure those QT files are up to date? Can we force an update?

Thanks

Paul

Also, how do we find out which version is currently installed?

I've sourced and downloaded Qt4.7.3 (no idea if it's original and safe) but there's too much in there to go blindly running all the .sis files. I found it amongst the ads and popups on this page: http://www.mediafire.com/?c6216k9iba2klcb

Does anybody know what should be installed?

Any opinions on whether we actually need to do this?

Well, this was an issue I had too (a few posts ago).
If you have not downloaded any Qt version, your phone has Qt 4.6.x (because it's the default on S^3 and it doesn't show up when you select 'app configuration').

To install the newest Qt version (4.7.3 nowadays), you have to download the Qt SDK (http://qt.nokia.com/products) (tip: choose online installation and mark only a few components - the most important is 'Qt for Symbian'). I suppose you are using Windows, so a shortcut will be created, called 'Install Qt on Symbian' or something like that.
There you go, Ovi Suite will automatically start and ask you to syncronize (or instead, you may locate the .sis files and install for yourself).

The download from mediafire contained eleven .sis files and one .sisx. I've attached a screen grab of the file list to this post.

bazao & bchlui, would you mind advising which ones should be installed?

Thanks loads!

You will need the 4.7.3 versions of QtWebKit and QtMobility plus (and this one is a guess) the 6.9MB qt.sis (my 4.7.2 Qt install sis file is 6.6MB but has a different file name)

Brill! Thanks JayTay.

Will try that now and report back.

-- Edit --
Installation worked

Installed qt.sis and qtwebkit from 4.7.3, then tried to install qtmobility.sis from 1.1.2 but received an error saying that I needed a later version of Qt. Rebooted phone, then qtmobility installed ok. I think that qtwebkit and qtmobility prompted for an installation location, I chose C: both times.

Browser does seem to be better, in fact a lot of phone operations do.

Many many thanks to bazao and JayTay!

You've convinced me to upgrade to - strangely mine didn't require a power cycle before qtmobility installed… I'm going to power cycle it anyway to make sure it's fully operational etc

Don't have PR 1.2, but hoping that it still makes a difference to 1.1

Er... well, I don't know exactly how to say that, but... @matthewrleech, how did you do the update? Actually, I haven't updated the Qt, I downloaded only.

I tried to install 4.7.3 version but the message 'couldn't erase the file' appeared. I tried via Ovi Suite and directly on the phone. Same error.

Ok, sorry guys, for posting a lot... (but better than say that my wife and I 'are trying to concieve this month' hahaha)

Here is the thing: I did it! I was able to update Qt to 4.7.3 version! One must:
1) turn off everything which uses Qt (e.g. Nokia Sleeping Screen)
2) turn off the phone
3) turn on the phone
4) execute all the .sis files (I did it directly on the phone)

Well... I think it's working because yes, I noticed the difference: before Qt 4.7.3 at the second webpage with flash video, the 'full memory' error appeared. Now it takes three webpages...

Anyway, it is a little quicker to be honest!

And here in Brazil a very nice blog got the annoucement:

Since I read that there will be no webcast or anything like, I'm afraid Nokia will only announce a deadline to release the news. No new phones, no Qt no-beta version, no PR... Oh my, I hope I'm wrong...

Sorry peeps.. been busy.. but its good that you guys have "found" 4.7.3 and tried it..

However.. I have forgotten to warn you all that its still PR version (post beta) and does break an untested amount of QT apps.. this includes the OVI store (which should be updated in time with the actual release of 4.7.3).

Theres no downgrade path at the moment back to 4.7.2 that I know of (searched around).. so applying it will mean you will be stuck with it until the formal release in "a couple of weeks" apparently.. Hopefully with the last minor bugs fixed!

So far though, only found OVI store and Bubbles to be affected (Bubbles always breaks anyway given its dependency on QT)..
