A real check on N97 popularity.

Here's the reality check outside of all the corporate PR jive and those who say "it's not too bad really just a few teething problems, I'm sure the [u]next[u] firmware will really fix it up and in the meantime mine's not running badly if I do the odd reboot (and don't do anything other than text and talk)." I've been fully expecting these stories to start turning up.

Nokia N97: Six months from shop floor to recycle bin?

Via ElectricPig

"The Nokia N97 has only been on sale since June, but the heavyweight flagship phone from the Finns is already being discarded at a clip, according to one phone recycler more than any other smartphone of 2009, in fact."

see link for rest of article

This is not a sign of a quiet majority plodding on happily with their trusty N97's as we have been assured repeatedly - quite the reverse. It shows all the squawking in here about how bad it is is the tip of the iceberg. And shows why resale prices are so prohibitively low - if Steve is looking to run one of his bargain flagship storuies on The Phones Show again the N97's pretty cheap now

This appalling service and product will come back to haunt them, they would be better advised to accept admit and address it now rather than letting it fester. Try and talk to what after all were the purchasers of their flagship, involve them and stop blowing smoke up their a**es - for a start they're missing.

I do seriously believe the N97's failure will set Nokia back immensely, at a time when other phone manufacturers 'high profile' devices seem to gaining popularity and breaking away in the 'sexyness' stakes ( iPhone, HTC , Android ).

My own measurement of how popular the phone ( N97 ) really is, is to see how many other people I can see using it ( apart from me ! ) and over the seven monhts I've ownded, in Saudi I've counted about three people, in the UK, about two.

Whereas lets say the Nokia 5800, I've seen loads of folk using this ( mainly women and students ) , the iPhone just seems to be EVERYWHERE here Saudi, perhaps the most popular phone, closely followed by the N95.

So this isn't a well researched analytical posting, it's just my observation of what I notice around me.

Interesting the 5800 makes number 6 on their most recycled phone as well!

I would love to see actual usage stats (as opposed to sales) for the N97, because mine ended up with Mazuma before Xmas.

When I travel to London or Edinburgh every few months, I have yet to see another N97 in the wild, although I do see a few 5800s, I see LOADS more iPhones.

I too have yet to see another N97 in somebody's hands. Although can't move for iPhone's - poor Apple they must be upset losing their cliqueyness.

It gives me a warm fealing of exclusivity. Just off to watch a movie on my Betamax and then take my C5 out for a spin.

Heh.

Where I live at the moment (ZA) surprisingly enough, I actually do see more N97s than 5800s. I don't think iPhones are selling that well here, or maybe I just don't know the right people.

Don't forget to pay a few games on the old Sega Saturn...

I suppose if every phone that Nokia has released in the last 3 years was identical to the N97 we'd see a lot more.

True, I am seeing more iPhones but they're a mixture of 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation.

In my circle, N97 and iPhone owners are on a par.

When the N97 first came out I saw quite a few. After about six weeks, I started to see fewer and fewer. Haven't seen one for months now - except in the Computer Exchange shop.

I've yet to see another N97 or N97 mini in the US (in someone's hand or in a store).

Most people that I've run into have an iPhone, iPhone 3G or 3GS or an HTC.

I'm also the only person with either an N800 or N810 that I've run into.

Pretty easily...I catch myself coming & going (kind of like Dr. Who).

My mother accuses me of burning the candle at both ends AND in-the-middle!

At least you didn't chastize me for my grammar...."a preposition is a bad thing to end a sentence with."

Sounds like we had similar mothers rcdinhou.

"You'll meet yourself coming back my lad" was one of her favourites.

Right up there with... "You'll be late for your own funeral my lad".

Like I'd care!
