Phone Handset UIQ Preview UIQ 3.0 at 3GSM

Along with the tantalising tagline "UIQ 3.0 is now Commercially Available," UIQ Techologies are showing off version 3.0 of their interface. Geared to one handed operation, it promises better network support, and advanced technologies. Well have more later...

Press Release

UIQ Technology demonstrates UIQ 3.0 at 3GSM

At the 3GSM World Congress, Cannes, France, UIQ Technology will unveil its latest interface platform for mobile phones, UIQ 3.0. You are invited to attend this special media demonstration, which will be the first official viewing of UIQ 3.0, on UIQ Technology’s yacht on Monday, February 14, at 3.00 PM (15.00 CET).

The successful first two releases of UIQ – UIQ 2.0 & UIQ 2.1 – created a strong demand from mobile phone manufacturers for a continuation of the UIQ platform. What they asked for was a UIQ platform that would enable them to create a highly diversified range of phones in terms of form factor, branding and operator configuration..

This new version of UIQ offers the framework and the tools to help mobile phone manufacturers innovate and create highly differentiated mobile phones. It does this through one developer platform without duplicating engineering effort. Mobile phone manufacturers, UIQ partners and independent developers can create one component that serves all UIQ 3.0 phones regardless of form factor and branding.

UIQ 3.0 offers mobile phone manufacturers the possibility of developing and building a family of phones - on the same code base - with different form factors. The customization possibilities in UIQ 2.0 and 2.1 have been further extended and in addition a mechanism called Operator Configuration Package, OCP, which enables configuration of the phone software to network operator requirements, has been added. This means that the mobile phone manufacturer can tailor phones in the product portfolio against different market segments whilst still allowing operators to promote their brand and services.

UIQ 3.0 also adds support for the advanced functions and services required by the implementation of 3G. UIQ 3.0 is commercially available now.

For who? UIQ3 seems to be conspicuous by its absence, where's the UIQ3 version of the K700 or P910? SonyEricsson seemed to be light on new phone announcements compared to say Moto, and the only new UIQ phones announced at 3GSM appear to be UIQ2.1.

Rafe, Ewan, was there any more to the UIQ3 demo than this vacuous press release suggests? Is UIQ3 finally moving aware from vapourware status?

"Commerically Available" means that UIQ 3.0 is available for handset manufactuers (SE for example) to start building phones around. I asked Johan Sandberg of UIQ (the CEO) and the quote is "sometime this year, but not before the summer."

I hate to sound like a stuck record, but UIQ seem to have omitted to tell anyone what 3.0 can do beyond 2.1, other than one handed operation, and better operator customisation.

Is that all there is to 3.0? Is it a major step forward for UIQ? Or are they going to look silly compared to Series 60?

I'm enthusaistic about UIQ3 - potentially it sounds very interesting - but, there's so little solid information that one has to begin to wonder whether UIQ3 is anything more than vapour.
