'connection error' - 1 in 5 calls

Hi all,

I'm having a significant problem with my N97- about 1 in 5 outgoing & incoming calls I get a 'connection error' message, about two minutes into the call, and the call terminates. I don't make many calls on the N97 (I hammer the data though ) so I haven't noticed this until the last week or so, when I have been using it more on calls.

I've had a little hunt around the 'net and found a few people that are having the same issue, but no real solution.

Anyone know if its an isolated issue/bug with V20? If so I can hang on for a few weeks until the next version comes and see if that solves it. I'm reluctant to send back to Vodafone/Nokia but I still need to get the infamous GPS and lens replaced/repaired under warranty, but as I've debranded they will probably won't touch this issue under warranty?

Does anyone have any advice or should I just send it back to Nokia with a stern letter saying how unhappy I am with the device's issues - GPS, Lens, white screening, out of memory etc. and hope for the best. I'm a pretty patient guy but this is starting to take the biscuit.

BTW I'm running N97 V20.0.019 - and have done a hard reset twice since updated.

Cheers

connection errorr is to do with your network operator and not nokia. so checck this out with your etwork operator. may be they are upgrading their system or maybe that you are on GSM and thats why you've got this problem. BTW on which network are you on? is it 3.5G, 3G or GSM?

Recently I have been visiting family in the south east of the UK, and am based in London and are having this problem wherever at different times of the day. Calls made to same and cross network. I'm Vodafone UK - 3.5/3g

From looking more into it last night I came across a article that the E71 had the same issues. http://www.e71fanatics.com/2008/10/e...trying-to.html

Some blame the network but one commenter suggests it could be a faulty SIM. I'll try that first.

In my experience dropped calls can be equally an issue with the handset and/or software build, just as it could be the network. And I didn't notice this problem before I upgraded to V20...

I'll let you know how I get on with a new SIM.

I agree with LP4U, it's more likely to be a Network issue, rather than a Nokia issue.

I had exactly the same problem on and off early 2009 (I am on O2) in an area where they don't have 'proper' 3G masts, just a couple of 'pico cells' for the town (O2 engineers told me about the pico cells so I am not making this up!). Pico cells have a weaker signal, smaller range, and can handle less concurrent connections than a full-on 3G mast. O2 sent me a replacement SIM with no improvement. The problem was worst at weekends then several days later the problem just disappeared. I have never ever experienced this issue when I am up in in Edinburgh, so I blame the pico cells in my town.

Anyhow, a simple way to prove it's the 3G network at fault, is to change the N97 from Dual-Mode to use only GSM and see if the problem goes away on 2G.
(Menu->settings->Connectivity->Network->Network Mode->GSM)

HTH!

OK thanks all for your suggestions.

I'm going to do some tests over the weekend and see if it is the network or phone.

I have my trusty N95 8gb as a reference and a spare SIM so I'm going to make the same calls on both at the same time, at various times and see how we get along. I'll post back the results.

Cheers

Hi all,

After some thorough testing over the weekend I couldn't replicate the issues I was having over the last few weeks - very strange. I hammered the calls over the weekend from both my N97 & N95 8GB to and no signs of weakness. Vodafone seems to be trying to call me the last few days (missed calls from a 0808 no.) they have obviously seen what I've been up to

I'm going to conclude it was a network issue, unless there are any other bright ideas. And when I speak to Vodafone I'll let them know how poor their network has got over the last few weeks!

Lets hope they can cope when the iPhone data usage starts hitting their network.

Cheers
