MP3 Player is skinable

After updating to firm 10 I made some searching as always to the firmware drives (a and z) to see any changes. Although I didn't see many changes (some files where missing though that were present on ver 07) I noticed the "skins" folder at a:\system\apps\Mp3Player The place where the MP3 player app is placed in the firmware. Although there is no option of skin selcting at the app you'll find two files on this folder. A png containing the graphics and a txt containing the configurations. So I started experimenting. At first I had the problem of modifying the files because they are in the firmware. So I followed the road that the Helix player APP also use by installing it self on the same folder name with the RealOne player and although on a different drive replacing it. So I just copied all the files from a:\system\apps\Mp3Player to e:\system\apps\Mp3Player. After making some modifications to the two files at the skin folder I saw that the trick was working. After a little work I had a working modified version of the MP3 Player...

The modified skin files can be found at:
http://users.otenet.gr/~bobotis/mp3play/skin.zip

and a screenshot to show how it looks:

By the way this is not a finished skin.
To say the truth I cannot even see it as a skin but rather a bad demonstration of the skining capabilities of the MP3 Player. Due to the very limited free time I have nowadays I don't know when I'll show my first finished work for it or even try to experimenting with the config file considering the hard work at university and also the exams that are coming in less than a month...

Cool

Hey that's pretty cool ... I can see the potential there!

What program did you use to edit the png file?

Adobe Photoshop 7

But I am sure that there are many other progies that can do the same like xnview (it is freeware and can convert from/to many different types) or many paintshop apps...

I've created a metallic silver skin ... it's not working *exactly* as it should... I haven't quite figured out how to change the shape of the buttons yet either.

The little time I've experiment with the config file I've found out that most of the buttons have four numbers. eg. buttonright: 140 33 175 126
I believe that the first 2 coresponds to the x and y position of the top left pixel of the button while the last 2 correspond to the x and y position of the bottom right pixel.

I was a little confused because I was waiting the last 2 numbers to be refering to the width and height just like with oggplay skins.

There are also some config for the color used by the fonts like
tracknamecolour: 255 255 255
the 3 numbers correspond to red green blue. For example 0 0 0 is black while 255 255 255 is white.

There are three lines that are unidentified.
tracknamefont: 3
tracktimefont: 19
size: 14

the first 2 are for sure about the font used but I don't know exactly which font each number corresponds to.
The 'size' line is also a mystery to me...

Lastly some numbers of buttons are a mystery also like buttonhighlight.
Reading the x and y gives the wrong idea. I believe that the y pixel offset zeros at 143 meaning that 143=0, 144=1 and so on because that's where the end of the bakground is and also after that the button and other stuff images start at the png file...

The two relevant files in the a:\system\apps\Mp3Player\skins directory are "read only" on my phone. I am unable to replace or edit them. How do I chage the attributes?

You can't.

Drives A and Z are ROM (Read Only Memory) Drives.

In order to be able to modify the skin files you have to make the app be able to run from a writable drive.

So first download a 3rd party File Manager. I recomment Domi's FExplorer. You can find it at www.gosymbian.com

After that go to a:\system\apps and copy the 'Mp3Player' folder With FExplorer just press '1'). Then paste it either to C:\system\apps (your phone memory) or e:\system\apps (MMC)
(in the case of FExplorer choose first File->Make Dir, then name it Mp3Player and after that just press 7 to paste the files into that directory).

After that you can modify the skin files. In case you still can't modify/replace the skin files just change the attributes of the files and remove read only.

Here's my effort, with preview. I've modified the font and font colour (guesswork) in the .txt file to something a little more fitting for the skin.

Things started to go a little pear shaped when I started modifying pic locations so I have left them default for now.

Further to this, if you use photoshop you can download the attatched zip - it contains a psd template which should make the skin creation a whole heap easier!

Otherwise I'm providing it in standard png format too:

I'm not much of a 'skinner' so let's see some decent designs from those with the skills

BTW, this thread should definitely be sticky!

Two more from a famous winamp skin:

Download attatchment and rename the files when you install them.

Good job there evobit.

Too bad that I am no more interested in the MP3player skining as I am planning to make some skins for oggplay. I may try some things with the txt file to see how it is working...

Anyway keep it up.

Does oggplayer play mp3s also? What are it's advantages? Oggs are smaller than mp3s? Is it easy to convert mp3s to Oggs? Are the skins easier to make?

No it cannot play mp3, only oggs.

Advantages of OggPlay:
-OpenSource (if you want sth and you are a developer you can add it or either ask nicely the developers to do it).
-More customized skins.
-Analyser (skin depentand)
-Extra Volume boost of 6 or 12db (coming on the next version).

Disadvantages:
-PTT on headset is not utilised (there is no documentation in the SDK and Siemens id not giving any support on this)

Advantages of Ogg Vorbis compression:
-Open Source
-More sophisticated compression (An 128kbps mp3 file has the same quality with a 64kbps ogg)

Convertion between any type of file to ogg is easy by using a program like dbPowerAmp Music Converter (www.dbpoweramp.com - don't forget to also download the codec plugins).

Now I don't know how easier the skins are to be made (especially after your photoshop template you posted) but if all goes well I am thinking of creating a Skin editor in C++ .

For any more info checkout http://symbianoggplay.sourceforge.net/

And a screenshot of a skin I've made sometime ago...
