Internal GPS works fine with Garmin XT; you can download the latest update from there website.

Hi all,

I've just got this installed yesterday.

IT WORKS on the internal GPS!!

I have to say the user interface and usability is good as TOMTOM, and I can also add custom camera updates to it like TOMTOM. I've been waiting for something like this for ages, now finally its here!

I gave it a testing on my way to work this morning, the routing is fast, voice instructions is clear, I feel like i;m using tomtom!

Thumbs down Route 66

Try testing route 66 properly, on some different trip's ?
And u will see it dosent direct u 'the nearest way' to a point.
I always gets a longer route than nessecery.

And if u cant trust the soft when u are on unknown land, what good is it then?
(same deal with Navigon 6,35 :( Only nokia maps and garmin xt does it proper)
Actually i hate to say it, but nokia maps is THE most precise i've tried yet

Just my humble opinion

Cheers all

Hi

Has anyone tried this on the 8GB, is it easy to install as obviously you can't just slip in the sd card as they suggest on their site.

Cheers

Garry

Having used TomTom before, Garmin Mobile XT kills it with it's built-in GPS support as well as custom POIs, speed camera support, custom vehicle icons, and more.
Of course, living about 3 miles from Garmin's USA HQs pretty much guarantees the maps in my state are highly accurate as well. As far as built-in POIs, well this thing seems to have everything in it. The maps are DEFINATELY a lot more updated than the latest TomTom for Symbian. I've run both on my N95-1 (v20 firmware) and N95-3 (US HSDPA version) and Garmin Mobile XT displays newer roads than the latest TomTom.
Those of you waiting around for TomTom to support internal GPS chipsets in the latest Nokia phones, stop waiting and get Garmin Mobile XT instead.
Also, Garmin's Topo 2008 mapsource maps are compatible with Mobile XT as well.
In other words, you can carry not only road navigation but detailed topographical maps as well for those times when you're off-road or hiking. And yes, it can display both at the same time, but that gets pretty busy and on the N95-1 models tends to crash out so it's bestto select one map or the other depending on your needs at the time.
I cannot recommend the latest Garmin Mobile XT application highly enough.

And yes, it works on the N95 8GB.

Sorry, but I found it not as good. Restricted to one small memory card, missed instructions, and a very bad postcode database makes it suck for me.

About 4 or 5 bits on a 1 hour journey missing the voice instructions is unforgivable IMO.

The fact that the Europe map is 1.3Gb puts me off a bit. I am in the UK for 11 months of the year so it'd be better for me if it came in several files so I could just add the country I was going to when I needed it.

You dont have to install 1.3gb of maps; You install mapsource onto your pc and then you can select what parts of europe you want to transfer over to your phone.

I had a play with Garmin today on a friend's N95, trying to navigate around Milton Keynes.

He was using the v9 maps, rather than the 2008 maps (which I have heard are only available in Europe form... err... "unofficially"?).

The map routing was fine, the interface nicer than Route66 (although it would be nice if it would be faster drawing the map), but the voice directions were terrible.

As people from the UK might know, MK has a fair few roundabouts and Garmin did a terrible job on them. Most of them are simple 4 way crossroad type but for almost all the "straight on" roundabouts, it said "turn left", despite the route shown on the display being correct.

I'm certainly not planning on buying this any time soon.

Route66 has been fine for me, except a couple of odd moments on the M1 between MK and London where while I'm following the route, it suddenly decides that there is no way for me to get to the destination.
