Problem with updating firmware

I've been trying to update the firmware on my N95-1. It's branded to Orange so the latest available is v13.0.0.3. I upgraded the other day and it was fine apart from crashing when using a few apps at once, so I tried reflashing to solve this.
Now however since the latest attempt the phone won't boot up properly, and the desktop flashes on and off when it starts. I can get it connected via usb to try updating again but it loses the usb connection after a few mins so the update fails.

Does anyone have any suggestions what could be wrong or what I could try? I've considered debranding and upgrading to the latest firmware, but I understand that this voids the manufacturer's warranty so I'm not sure this is a good idea.
