Bricked my N97?...

183 replies · 99,073 views · Started 01 July 2009

I have just changed my product code to Euro 1 and it all seemed to go well.
NSU told me that I could install 11.0.021 and it all went well and even told me that the update had been sucessful.

Now all my new lovely N97 is doing is getting about 3 seconds into the startup beeping, screen lighting up and then resetting. Again and again and again.

Please, please, please someone tell me how I can recover this?

This was a vodafone branded N97 with product code 0585262.

John

Can't help directly but I had exactly the same probelm using the same upgrade process...

Have taken it to a Nokia Service Center to see if they can breathe any life into it 😞 ARRRGH

Sorry to say that phone IS bricked... Nokia Service Centre were unable to install software either... 😞

I did the same with my Vodafome N97 only I changed the product code to
0585162 (UK CV B) not the Euro one from 0585262 which is Vodafone's so I can't upgrade yet. What I did notice in NSU when I changed the product code and debranded it went from downloading 0Mb to 131.something Mb in less than a second then took a normal amount of time to download the last ten Mb. I'm wondering if it only replaces part of the firmware when debranding to the same basic software version ( ie V10) and when you try and upgrade and debrand at the same time there is a conflict with something missing for the generic V11 software to wor, hence the bricking.

aargh! I have exactly the same problem! Used JAF 1.98.62 to change the product code from my Black Voda one - 0585262 to 0570817: RM-505_EMEA_EURO_QW1 Black.

All seemed fine, Almost the same as using NSS to debrand my N95 and N95 8GB. I backed up the phone using the nokia suite software. Then ran Nokia software updater. All completed fine, then BANG white flashing screen!

Anyone know how to use JAF to re-flash it? Or have a solution to this issue? If not I'll phone Voda and blag them that it's broken.

Cheers.

I debranded my VF n97 with the UK code (0585162) with v10, but going from that to the euro product code (RM-505_EMEA_EURO_QW1 Black - 0570817) and proceeding to v11 firmware bricked mine also. We can't even manually re-flash as its on a uniteruptable power cycle when connected to USB, as this must initiate charge which it obviously can't handle. If charge and USB were still seperate then we might have had a better chance... As far as I can tell there is no solution but the return the handset for a replacement.

Shame, as I was just starting to get fast on the keyboard!

the only way i know of is to use phoenix to flash a dead phone, search google to find phoenix

The Nokia Service Center will definitely see the product code changes. I got my old N95 8Gb there once to replace my slider mechanism. This was done within warranty, but after finishing the repair, the service guy hooked up my phone to his system and he mumbled: "Ahhh... I see you have been playing around a lot already!", pointing at a print that showed an exact list of when and how the codes were changed. He didn't make a problem of it, as replacing the slider had nothing to do with software problems.

I just bricked my Vodafone N97... It's odd how it's only Vodafone N97s that are Bricking. Would Vodafone have done something to the software to punish people for debanding their phones? Also won't Vodafone get suspicious about so many people suddenly getting "faulty" phones the day after a firmware update is released?

I did find a site with claims of dead flashing an N97 back to life with jaf too. So that's jaf AND phoenix to try.

Maybe this bricking is caused my installing V11 firmware which is specifically for North America models. RM-507, where as yours is no doubt a RM-505. Best to wait for the approved V11 firmware for your specific model.

v11 is out for north america and alot of other places, most ppl change code to a euro code

Any links to sites claiming to have a jaf/phoenix fix? I've just changed to 0570817 and updated on my Three N97 and have the same issue. NSU said the update was successful.

Looks like I'll be sticking with the N95 for another 12 months otherwise 😃

Haven't picked up my N97 yet, was planning to debrand and upgrade firmware as soon as I got it, now I'm getting worried with all these bricking stories.

Let us know how you get on, it would be good to know there's an escape route to revive a dead phone ourselves or else it will be time to don the blagging hat and contact customer services.

Good Luck

I must admit i struggle to understand why people risk so much for so little gain. The N97 may have a few bugs which are ironed out by the update but at least it works, and the update will come soon anyway.

Risking complete meltdown seems madness to me

But hey, what do i know.......as far as I know JAF is a short term for Jaffa Cake

Well the risk is not usually too great, I've debranded almost all my phones with no problems thusfar, and the gain is significant IMO. I had a debranded t-mobile N95 and was receiving new firmware months and months before the t-mobile release.

The fixes for me were worth the risk, especially in the firmware with demand paging, it made the phone infinitely better to use.

If there's new firmware out for my phone, i want it... and I want it NOW dammit

lol, fair enough.

Will the update come sooner for non - branded UK phones? Presumably it takes longer for the networks to release it for their phones?

Yeah for sure, that's the whole point of debranding, the networks take forever to release the updated firmware. I don't know about other networks but t-mobile seem to take ages to release.

Bugger - upgraded to T-Mobile on Tuesday!!

Oh well, I'm sure it'll be worth the wait - I love upgrading my phone (amazing leaps and bounds appeared on the N95 after owning it from release) but can't say I'd want to risk kiilling it to do so!!

Just as a point of interest - How do you know what is branded and where? The N97 I received from Tmobile is unlocked and has no Tmobile branding on it or in the software?

Hey guys. Did you flashed same FW after changing product code? And restarted phone? Or you just flashed new FW straight after changing product code? I want to change code to flash new fw with more languages. Let us know, what exactly you were doing before it bricket.

Holy crap this worked!!

Everyone that managed to brick their phone using JAF to debrand then NSU to update needs to check this out.

I used NAVIFIRM to download the v11 firmware set.
I had to fiddle with JAF because it didn't automatically pick up the correct ROMs, so I had to select them manually as follows:

MCU Flash file: C:\Temp\N97\firmware\RM-505_11.0.021_prd.core.C00
PPM Flash file: C:\Temp\N97\firmware\RM-505_11.0.021_prd.rofs2.V01
CNT Flash file: C:\Temp\N97\firmware\RM-505_11.0.021_C01_prd.rofs3.fpsx
APE Variant file: C:\Temp\N97\firmware\RM505_507_11.0.021_uda1_001.uda.fpsx

Select Maunal Flash, Dead USB, Factory Set and Normal mode and hit flash.

My N97 is now working again. I'm guessing it's on the right firmware because that's what I flashed, what's the *# code to check?

TYVM for the heads-up, andonevris.

Credit to Davwill and Fats - My N97 has recovered too!! Many thanks guys. Wow, what a turn up for the books.

YAY 😊

this thread needs to be spread around other forums so ppl can revive there n97s

No problem Fats. Glad it worked 😊

Not so worried about messing with my N97 now .....when I finally get it

Folks,

I'm struggling here so please help.

When trying to locate the MCU file it is only letting me select CMT files. I can select the PPM, CNT and APE files without any problems.

I have also copied the jaf 1.98.64 ini files and I can see the N97 option but it does not seem to pick it up.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

John
