The module is an EMTAC CRUX II; originates somewhere in Scandinavia and is supposed to be a clone of the Nokia unit. Nothing I can find on the TomTom website...

This Lam can be used only with GENIMAP software.

Try their site. If You do not succeed, I`ll take a look over my files or internet.

Cheers

Well, the unit is manufactured by Emtac and their spec (from www.emtac.com) says it works with any Symbian OS GPS software - probably to NMEA standard like everything else ? It says it uses the drivers that come with the software, so it seems likely. It's just that I don't want to pay for software and then find there's a problem with the unit; I would prefer to get the driver separately and test them. A friend says there's an option to install GPS support on the TomTom CD, I'd like to see that...

That device is not compatible with Tomtom software, because those
support only Nokia's Lam-1 module. You can use your gps with Genimap Navigator
http://www.genimap.fi/kuluttajatuotteet/alue.asp?folder=158&2057

there is no version to just try out... you have to bought it first.

I am using that Navigator software with Palmtop gps (connector changed from psion to PC DB9 connector).

You could try your gps with (shareware) NewTelnet, in serial mode, to find out if unit is working. That sw can be used about 30 days, before registering.

Update I have loaded a trial version of GPS locator and this talks to the unit. So, my unit works OK. I'm going to play with the software for a while to see if it does what I want; it is expensive so I'll be giving it a thourough test. It's annoying that I can't get a trial of the Genimap software for comparison - and an email to TomTom was never replied to. Not impressed by either company...

I am thinking of writing my own simple programs to talk to the unit, but as I've never done OPL or serial port programming it would be a bit of an undertaking from scratch - does anyone have/know of some sample code that could help me on the way ?

The interface speed of the Crux-II amounts to 4800 baud, the interface speed of the LAM-1 amounts to 19200 baud. The software Genimap can work with both speeds, the software of TomTom can only work with 19200 baud. Because of the wrong speed the driver of TomTom does not see the CruxII during the initialization.

Greetings geoHartmut
