Help needed with Email Automatic Retrieval
I've just got a Nokia 5800 and I am quite confused with its Messaging system. I have set up an IMAP email account with Gmail and set it for automatic retrieval with 5 min interval.
When the Messaging is open and running, I get new emails instantly (instead of 5min intervals) but when exit the Messaging application I never get any alert for new emails.
Is this how it suppose to be and does this mean I need to keep Messaging always running?

guess so
Hi foobar
I don't have answer to your observation of "frequent checking " instead of
at 5 min interval.
However with the connx. I too have observed in both the settings
that is
1. Email notifications
2. Email retrieval
They function/work only if the connection is kept open. When u leave the email box, the phone asks you want to disconnect from the mailbox?
I would press the central white button to keep the connx active .If i tell the phone to disconnect, then i don't get any notifications nor retrieval.

1. You need to have either the connection up all the time or
2. use push-mail provider. After many problems with Nokia Messaging I switched to Emoze ( http://www.emoze.com/en/products/consumer.asp - free for one account) and I love it. Intergates nicely with built-in 5800 directories and has nice pop-up mail notification and a small "new mail" icon. Just exactly what I need.

Messaging needs to be open all the time?
So , does this mean that Messaging needs to be open all the time and if I exit this application, which may result in this application not being able to connect to the internet the retrieval will not work?
in simple terms if I exit Messaging will I not be informed about new emails?

Yes, if you exit Messaging you won't be informed about new e-mails because it isn't connected to the mail server when you don't have Messaging over.
Like mkj011 said, if you want to keep being notified about new e-mails all the time, just press the Menu button and leave the Messaging application to keep it open and keep the Mail connection existent.
