OggPlay now available for S60 3rd Edition!

Yes, oh yes, OggPlay is now available for S60 3rd Edition smartphones! Those of you (like me) with a hard disk full of .ogg files can now play music in this efficient format on current devices, at long last. In fact, it's double good news, as I hear there's a new version of Pocket Ogg coming up that also now works properly. Ewan's planning a head-to-head review very soon!

Read on in the full article.

And both work very well, although Oggplay is a Beta version.

Great stuff. That made me discover yet another hidden feature of my E61: the built-in mixing deck.

That's very easy:
- launch both oggplay and the music player
- set the music player volume to 100% and oggplay's volume to 0%
- start playing a song in the music player
- switch to oggplay and select the next song but don't start it yet
- when the first song is close to the end, start playing the second song in oggplay and start raising the volume progressively in oggplay using joystick right.
- when the volume in oggplay is at 50%, start decreasing the volume in music player with the volume down key while keeping increasing oggplay's volume with the joystick until oggplay's volume is at 100% and music player's volume is at 0%
- that's it! Smooth and professional transition. Who needs all that DJ equipment when you've got the E61?

(i know, this is silly, i don't even know how that idea came to my mind but it does definitely work and it works very well indeed)

Hey elp,

That may be a bit silly (pretty cool though) but it got me thinking. OggPlay doesn't have an equaliser but the music player does. What if I play oggs with OggPlay and change the equaliser settings with music player. Bass boost for OggPlay and I didn't have to write any code to do it

OMG now I hate Nokia, I'd planned to spend some time writing a Bass boost / graphic equaliser for OggPlay, now there is no point :-(

At last!

It says 'Unstable Build' on the boot screen but it's worked perfectly so far. (BTW I'm assuming if we want to use OggPlay for mp3s etc we need the 'MMF' version)?

OggPlay seems to make much better use of the screen real estate & navigation than the built in music player. The whole album is always viewable while the song is playing. Just scroll to select a different track. (this requires at least four seperate clicks on the built in player).

Don't miss the Options / Hotkey settings. You can assign an individual key for pretty much all types of track navigation.

Feeling a lot of love for OggPlay. Just wish I could try out actual 'ogg' files. I still haven't found a mac mp3 to ogg converter that actually works. [Although I already buy my songs from itunes (mp4p) rip them to CD & back to mp3 to remove the protection. Converting them a 4th(?) time to ogg is probably not a good idea?]

One thing I'd like to see on phone music players is a large text option. Trying to switch tracks while it's attached to your car dashboard is more than a little dangerous.

It'd also be nice if you could direct the 'Find New Files' feature to the actual directory you keep all your music in. I imagine updating the library would be a lot quicker each time you add new songs.

In any case, EXCELLENT PLAYER! Looking forward to your upcoming ogg face-off. Can't quite imagine how much better pocketogg would have to be for it's price.

My attitude is that OggPlay releases are betas / unstable in the same way that Windows XP is a beta / unstable. OggPlay is a work in progress: it gets patched every month or so, just like Windows!

To get large text you need to install a skin that uses a large font. The easiest way would be to modify the standard skin to use "double size" fonts. Unfortunately one of OggPlay's big missing features is a skin editor, so making skins is not very easy at the moment.

Red face Ummm - so where is it?

Okay I know I'm a bit dense, but all I find at the lined site is :

"Series 60 V3
A version of OggPlay for Series 60 Version 3 is currently under development. Beta test releases will be available soon."

Should I try an earlier one Steve?

Help please

The final and official version of OggPlay for Symbian S60v3 doesn't work on Nokia E71. I installed it and it can play very well MP3 files but no way FLAC files. Any suggestions?
