different address...
Elsewhere on the net, I found someone having a similar problem.
They'd been advised to use this address for their SMTP server:
62.213.128.92
which appears to be smtp.vizzavi.co.uk
can't hurt to try it, I guess.
If the vodafone one's not working, I really can't see what you can do other than complain to them or find another smtp server....

Thanks for all your efforts, I had tried all sorts of smtp servers with no success, vizzavi.net, vizzavi.co.uk, vodafone.net, vodafone.co.uk, and several others. After threatening to cancel my contract and go to Orange someone who actually knew what they were talking about phoned me from vodafone.
I now have fully a fully working vodafone.net email account which I can send and recieve on using both dial-up and gprs.
This is what the guy told me. Delete any messages from the email outbox. Turn off the phone and remove the battery and simcard. Replace battery and simcard and turn the phone back on.
Then enter these settings
Internet
{Vodafone GPRS}
Account name : whatever you like
Connection type : GPRS
Username : web
Password : web
Address : internet
{Vodafone Dial-Up}
Account name : whatever you like
Connection type : dial up
Username : vodafone@vodafone.net
Password : vodafone
Phone number +447836900884
Email
{Basic tab}
Account name : whatever you like
Your name : your name
Email address : youremail@vodafone.net
Connection type : POP3
Internet account : I set to preferred, I can then choose whether to connect using dialup or gprs
{Inbox tab}
Username : your email username
Password : your email password
Incoming server address : pop.vodafone.net
Download : up to you
{Outbox tab}
Outgoing server address : smtp.vizzavi.co.uk
Homes this helps someone out.

"no route available" - problem solved
I too was having the "no route available" problem with me phone.
I am on an Orange contract & using an orange.net email account.
All the settings were correct but I still couldn't receive emails.
Then I tried Chewies suggestion of turning off the phone, removing battery & sim, then re-insert & power on...
eh voila! Functioning email
thanks very very very much

I had the same problems SENDING mail from Vodadfone.
To get over it I set the SMPT server to send.vodafone.net. I can now send and receive from my old POP account although sending is not always sucessful.
