Is it normal for E61i to be slow?

I got a new E61i some days ago. The main drawback I faced from the first use is that it is somewhat slow. Is this normal or there is something wrong with my device. It works well, but interface response is not fast enough, and some elements took up to 10 seconds to open, a new text message from Active Standby is an example.

Is this normal?
I hope to know Steve's opinion, as I know he is using an E61i now.

No that is the speed I encounter from the starting use. It's speed is average, not too slow. But it's not the speed I expected frim such advanced device. But the speed of openning a new text message is abnormal, and that was slow even when no any 3rd party apps on it.

I think that speed of menu and applications is acceptable, but slower than 6630 (my old phone). Only New text message is the slowest task (at least 10 seconds to open). I installed till now 3 3rd party applications, 3 nokia dot themes (with different colors) from Download!

Is this normal? What can I do if there is a problem?

We have found it slow as well

We are running a Java app, and it is actually unusable on this phone due to the slowness. We went to another S60 series 3 device (the E50) and while that had a slowish screen refresh that seems to be recognized by Nokia, it ran our midlet pretty well. So I think this is an E61i problem and I am really hoping we will be able to upgrade the firmware at some point to something that takes into account the issues with the slow performance as a whole and any issues specific to the JVM as it is otherwise a great device with a lot of potential.

I am not finding my E61i slow at all. It takes about 3 seconds to open a new text message, from Active Standby, about 2 seconds for the calendar and tasks. Applications take about 4 seconds. I have a 3rd party theme and about 10 3rd party applications.

That could explain the felling... Guess what, until today I see the 6630 as the fast S60 device. Maybe only be match by N95, with a far superior processor. Between 6630 and others, they always lose

Well, I think that it's overall performance is average but not accepted. Generally speed is like what you say. But the most appkication I suffered from is the messaging application. It's performance is not accepted at all. It's working, bur I expect better than that from a messaging device.

I'll try in the next days to monitor and evaluate the performance of most applications I use.

What is the firmware version of your device? Also, how can I know the firmware version of mine?

On my E61i, starting a new text message takes 1 second. Opening an incoming message takes 1.5 seconds. Starting Notes (e.g.) takes around a second from scratch. Most apps come up instantaneously because I leave them running in RAM, of course. Java apps take the usual 4 seconds to load, but after that they run perfectly quickly.

Wierd how your device is so slow. How many contacts do you have (I have 600) and are you sure you haven't installed something silly like an unnecessary anti-virus utility?

I just now rebooted my device, and took the follwoing measurements after boot.

New text message (from standby): 4 - 5 sec (until being ready)
Notes (from right soft key, standby): 1.5 - 2 sec
Web (from standby): 4 (just open, not connected)
GMail (Java App) (from standby): 5 - 6 sec (just open, not connected)
My mailbox (using the email key, without connecting): 4.5 - 5 sec (just open, not connected)
SMS Inbox (from standby): 3.5 - 4 sec
Contacts (using the Contacts key): 3 sec
Menu: 2 sec
Installat. (from Menu I just opened): 4 sec (it becomes fast next times)

I know that Menu, Contacts and Log remains in RAM even if I stopped them so they come faster next times. But others are the nearly the same in the second time. I installed the following apps till now:
  • Reuters
  • Nokia Maps
  • GMail (Java)
  • Fring

The following apps already installed at purchase:
  • WorldMate
  • Golf Pro2

Also I installed 3 dot themes from Download! I have 262 contacts. That all I have now. I expect to install more powerful apps, but I take caution with software I choose.
The manufacture date of the device (as Warranty says) is nearly 23/6/2007.

Are these measurements normal? Or I have to contact my Nokia dealer?

An additional note:

I opened New text message from the standby shortcut, then returned to standby by pressing Menu key twice, leaving the New text message running in background. When I switch to the New text message using the task manager (press and hold Menu key), it takes nothing. But if I press the shortcut in the standby again (while it's already runnig in RAM), it takes the same duration as if I open it from scratch. Also openning a new text message from within the Messages App takes nearly 2 sec. Switching between Messaging parts (Inbox, My Folders, Drafts, etc) using the scroll right key takes nearly 2 sec. It's bad performance as I think.

Mine has the same version. I'll try to format memory card and format all the system.

Some of your times sound about right, but others are too long. Forget the standby shortcuts though. Make the shortcuts to the raw apps and then worry about what to do in them etc. And make sure you don't exit apps, always leave them running if possible.

I still think something's wrong though. Contacts should always be instant, as should the Messaging email inbox using the dedicated key. Something's getting in the way. Try my refresh procedure:
