Auto-connection to mailbox

If I close down the email program will it still auto-collect email from the server if it is set to do this?

I have mine configured for every half an hour but it seems a bit hit and miss.

The phone will still scan for emails even if you shut down the email client program. However, if you lose 3G or GPRS signal the phone will automatically switch off the auto email retrieval and you'll have to re-activate the option again under the relevant menu setting in email settings.

Why on earth does it do that? It's obvious that sometimes it can't connect because there is no signal. It should just try again at the next polling time.

So now I'm going to have to mess about turning the auto-retrieval back on several times a day :(

That was pretty much my initial thoughts too.
