6600 & HS-3W - phone does not ring (firmware? fixes?) tribulations

Nokia 6600 and Nokia HS-3W bluetooth headset work together well as far as talking on the phone - but the two seem to always be connected, there doesn't seem to be a standby mode that the headset goes into. most importantly the phone no longer rings when the headset is connected. the ring is diverted to the earpiece of the headset. Wow. How could you make such a well designed phone and operating system and then f*ck up something as simple as the phone needing to ring when a call comes in!!! amazing!
Anyways anybody have any luck fixing it?
I read some about firmware, but I don't have time to endlessly speculate. Anyone have experience fixing this BT headset problem with Nokia?
