key in this (jog dial up * jog dial down jog dial down * jog dial down *) in the flip closed view., to access the service menu. Then choose the option to format the internal disk.
This formats C, and replaces it with the ex-factory setting.

Actually a master reset deletes all user data (eg photos, apps), and a format deletes everything on the phone and reinstalls the operating system, so you have a clean phone to restore a backup/reinstall your apps etc.
I have done it a couple of times, it simply returns it to its "out of the box" state. It's slightly more comprehensive than a master reset, but I think better, depending on what you want ot achieve of course.
Anyway, why did you want to do the master reset in the first place?

Done the master reset. It worked fine.
It's a second hand phone. I don't know the lock codes. Is there anyway I can get that back to its default code?

OK, I have this issue as well, someone left our firm, and forgot the Device Lock code. But the solution listed doesnt seem to reset the Device Lock code.
It does just about everything else, but when I try to change the device lock settings, it tells me that the code is incorrect when using the default 0000. This is exactly the same behaviour as before the format.
Any other ideas?
