Question GPS - Start tracking

Hi,

There was a lot of fuz before about Nokia removing the "Start Tracking" feature from the GPS with the new version 12.0.0.013.

I updated to the new version right away so I don't really know if there was a tracking feature before or not but I do know for sure I don't have it now.

I can't remember where or when I read about it but I do remember people beeing really pissed about this change but the strange thing I can't find anything about it on this forum anymore?

Does anyone know the latest information about this issue?
Was it only a mistake removing this feature and it will come back in the next version or did Nokia remove it for good?

Can someone explain the difference between the "Start Navigation" function and this so called "Start Tracking" feature?

Also, does anyone know if it's possilbe to start the Maps application without the phone trying to connect to the satelites? Sometimes I just want to check out the maps but not waste the valuable battery time.

Cheers,
Nic

Navigation is a feature which you have to pay for, which gives you real-time turn-by-turn audio directions. Tracking is free, and shows your route marked on the map while following your GPS location - but does not give directions.

Although I'm not certain if this works, Settings > General > Positioning and disable all methods of positioning might start Maps without using the GPS?

Tracking was removed all together in the new maps version. If you want it back, hard reset your phone and it will bring back the older maps application with tracking. Just remember not to update your maps program.

If I am right, u ppl are talking about route simulation. "start simulation" is a feature which was removed by Nokia in previous update. but with this last Nokia Map update, this is active again.

Talking

Tracking is the feature that you could use after planning your route and would show your position in relation to that route in real time without voice navigation. It wasn't the simulation feature.

MAP's > Options > Plan Route > Then select starting point and destination > Options > Show route > Options > Start tracking

The route is highlighted and your current position is shown. A very, very useful feature.

Hey thanks for all your answers...

First about using the Maps application without the phone trying to connect to the satelites and save batteries.
Thanks for your answer Mithent, i tried it and instead of searching for the satelites with yellow dots there are red dots appearing on the screen but I suppose the phone is not searching for satelites anymore, which should save the battery.

Second about the "Start tracking" feature.
1. ian-ross, thanks for your answer too. That is exactly the feature I was thinking about and thanks for explaining how it works. The main problem is that the feature "Start Tracking" is removed with the latest update. Now you can only choose between two options "Start Navigation" and "Start Simulation".
Which firmware and which Maps version do you use?
There was a big fuz about this on the forums a couple of weeks ago but it seems to have died out for some reason?

2. Candido, thanks for your answer but a follow up question. Did they remove the "Start Tracking" feature with the upgrade of the new Maps program or the new firmware? Can I upgrade to the new firmware without upgrading the new Maps program?

Cheers,
Nic
