Once you have set up the contacts list, maybe you could use your SIM to transfer the messages? Seem to remember when I first (very first) booted my P800, all my old messages were still there on the SIM, and I think I moved them to phone memory.
Maybe by shuffling the SIM between the two phones you could get anything important across.

The nokia 7650 stores the messages in phone memory, like the p800,and not on SIM.

OK, but there is a "Move To/From SIM" option on the P800.
Is there an equivalent on the Nokia?

You can copy SIM messages to Phone memory but not vice versa,i think.

If you still have your messages on the 7650 i think i have an even better solution.Have you heard of Desktop Message S60?It allows the user to send SMS from one's PC and to archive SMS's in theirs true format. There is an UIQ eqivalent of the same app,Desktop Message p800.I haven't tested this, and i don't know if it'll work but you can download your messages from the 7650 using Deskotop Message S60 and after that you can(Maybe)upload them to the p800 using Desktop Message p800.
Anyway,it wouldn't hurt to try.
