PSILOC Space Doubler ...... Awesome App!

Psiloc have just released Space Doubler...

Similar to SCompress, but will automatically unpack and run app when you select it, and will also repack the app when you exit.

Keeps your packed apps in the menu too!!

Downloaded the trial and tested it, its awesome.

A killer app!!!!

here:

http://www.psiloc.com/nokia/eng/sdoublerS60/index.html

MrGimper 28-11-2002 02:42 PM

Update:

Space Doubler seems to have an 8k overhead per packed app compared to scompress

E.G.
TriplePOP = 121k scompress, 128k spacedoubler
HantroCP = 98k scompress, 106k spacedoubler

spacedoubler prob needs this as a header on the packed app to tell it how to decompress

However, the size of the spacedoubler app is 37k, compared to 84k of scompress.

V happy here

omar_g 28-11-2002 02:44 PM

Sounds like the 'daddy' of all applications. Can't wait to give it a try.

Cheers m8, was so excited about it, forgot the link :)

Mr G

MrGimper 28-11-2002 03:25 PM

Another Update:

It appears that any packed apps suffer from slight screen corruption around the titlebar/icon when they are unpacked and run.

Happens to all my apps

Can anyone else confirm this b4 I send a mail to Psiloc

Cheers.

MrGimper 28-11-2002 07:43 PM

Just had a mail from Psiloc to say they have fixed this.

New version (0.96) available on their site.

Install new ver, unpack and repack your apps.

Really nice program!
Just saved 670kb of memory.

And it just take a second or so longer to start the programs.

Hi,
Thank you for your interest in sDoubler.
We will be improving the commpression methods to reduce time and space.
We are looking forward to hearing your feedback.

Cheers guys, you are onto a winner with this one :)

Hmm... sCompress, sDoubler Hmmm... might be some confusions. :-?
but great app. :D

MaleBuffy 28-11-2002 09:57 PM

Well, what happens if you have installed and compressed applications and lets say 200kb left! What happens if you try to play a game for example that will uncompress more than 200kb! has anyone tested this?

GhostDog 28-11-2002 10:08 PM

sCompress had that particular bug in the first public version (Memory Fill,Phone Crashing and such),they fixed it really fast,so if Space Doubler has that same problem,it would not be too hard to fix it.

Andrzej Sawicki PsiNT 28-11-2002 10:30 PM

Hi,
sDoubler will not allow you to uncompress if after uncompressing there is less space than 150 kB. It is the safe amount that 7650 will not crash.

50 Cent 28-11-2002 11:01 PM

space doubler is a stupid app, i deleted all the files that i compressed because it wont decompress it!!!!

MrGimper 28-11-2002 11:21 PM

in what way is it failing? I have had no probs at all

well, i haven't given it a go yet.. but i'm thinking maybe that it won't allow you to decompress because you have too little space left?

"sDoubler will not allow you to uncompress if after uncompressing there is less space than 150 kB. It is the safe amount that 7650 will not crash."

so prob. just clear up more space, and it shld let you decompress?

any other feedback/comments about this app?

kobe24 29-11-2002 02:03 AM

Maybe the forum gods could make a point per point comparison against competitors of Space doubler, namely sCompress.

Better yet, maybe they could have this comparison data fact sheet for all other products competing with each other. This way, we, the customers will benefit most from it. Not to mention, money wise.

Say, what happens if there's this new tool that you have bought and theres another tool having the same functionality...etc. You can or you can't buy everything.

:o

MaleBuffy 29-11-2002 05:02 AM

If you are going to talk about SpaceDoubler like that, at least tell us what happend and what error messages you got!

from what i'm reading, i believe that this sdoubler is better than sCompress simply because for all of us without the latest firmware upgraded, it's going to crash our phone - when we uncompress!

can anyone correct me if i'm wrong?

MaleBuffy 29-11-2002 06:21 AM

They fixed the problem with 3.12 I think! The differences are that spacedoubler is basicaly automated....

Andrzej Sawicki PsiNT 29-11-2002 07:00 AM

Hi,
To anas7650:
We are sorry to hear your opinion. We have tested and we never had such problem. Could you send us your feedback explaining your problem?

simeonbubblegum 29-11-2002 08:10 AM

A couple of things that I'm concerned about:

1. Uninstalling sDoubler leaves apps compressed and thus they are unusable!

2. What happens when trial period is over? Does it again leave apps compressed?

3. What happens when I uninstall a compressed app? Are the compressed files left on disk?

4. These compressers of course become obsolete when 3650 hits the markets.

spacedoubler - 37 kb
+ it installs :
PsiNT eLlib - 45 kb (hm whats this for??? )
PsiNT Helper - 6kb (i guess i dont need any helper on my phone :-? )

well .... your thoughts ?
:D

Well 1,2 are not their problem......if you zip a file with WinZip on Windows......does it uncompress it when you uninstall WinZip?...No...does it uncompress files when the trial is over?......No.

About 4. I dont think so....I would like to save space even though I can have a 128mb MMC card for example....we compress files on the PC and have like 80Gb hard disk....why not on a 128MMC card?

eidrian 29-11-2002 08:35 AM

It's a killer app, I only wish it will compress midlets too.

And I agree with above point, this will be useful even with 3650.

TANKERx 29-11-2002 08:51 AM

The eLib installation is so that the developers can put standard routines into a single place rather than have the same code individually installed for different applications. Makes sense to me.

Anyway - its great app ....

Yup, v good idea, modular code and all that.

Any psiloc prog installs these 2 files if you don't already have one of their products installed. I first noticed them when I installed Task Manager.

As for sDoubler becoming obsolete when the 3650 comes out, its a bold assumption to make that everyone who owns a 7650 will bin it and get a 3650.......

you creepy moron ! midlets are ALREADY COMPRESSED with ZIP compression technique (so called "JAR" files) so your wish shows your idiocy!

I must admit, I do hate the look of the 3650, the 7650 looks a lot more stylish.

And since I have a Pocket PC with a 1gb microdrive, I'm just waiting to get the MMC Bluetooth card, and then loadsa storage :) :)

1) True. Simply install it again and decompress apps.
2) No. You can still use sDoubler, but only to decompress apps.
3) Yes. Standard Nokia installer does not remove other files than specified by developer. But you can use eFile Manager to remove unnecessary files (Cleanup function).
4) Hmmm... With Space Doubler you can install 500 applications on 3650 (instead of 250) ;)

I installed sdoubler...It a good step forward BUT still it crashed on me....3.16 FW! I compressed Mill and Snails......Snails was compress 133% which I think was wrong...when I tried to play snails It uncompresed correctly and played...after exiting....It crashed...App closed...etc....The snail icon disapeared but......The folder Snail in c: was still there...had to delete manually! :(

What's the problem of this guy? :-? Why is he making speculation about who am I?

Do I have to know about how midlets are compressed, in order to be member of this forum? :-?

Don't worry about it m8, he posted as a guest, so obviously doesn't want YOU to know who HE is

sigmacom 29-11-2002 09:55 AM

I have posted in the past about sCompress, and I was complaining because when you "Packed" any application, it dissapears it's icon from the "Desktop" of 7650 ( :D Desktop! Hahaha! Reminds me MS Windows) and I wished to do something about this, because you had to "Unpack" before running the app.
But now, comes our familiar PsiLOC with an app with this issue fixed! I will try it, and I will report my problems (if experienced any).

mdkia 29-11-2002 10:17 AM

hi,
just to know (maybe stupid question), but sdoubler is supposed to work also with applications wich work in background?

i.e.: with the world clock alarm?

ciao

-jb- 29-11-2002 10:19 AM

Sure, but it isnt compressed while you are running it (and if its running in the background, thats all the time), and then it's a bad idea to have it compressed.
