Abushaheed Hey Steve excellent article as usual. I currently use a sony ericsson P1i and find the sunlight legibility to be quite good. I live in the tropics (lot's of sun here!) so this is an important issue where I live. Could you add the Nokia N97 and samsung i8910hd to this comparison and advise how they compare to the P1i?

5500, N79 and 5800

Hello,

I use a lot my phones for biking and running. Nokia 5500 sport is rather good in the sunligth but the screen is too small, N79 has a bigger screen (2.4") but slightly worse legibility and 5800... well I simply can't use 5800 because it's invisible most of the time (I live in Madrid, Spain so plenty of sunlight in the summer). Even when under a tree's shadow is rather difficult to see the screen.. and that's with a white background and black info. Imagine descending with your bike at 50Kmh approaching an intersection and having to look at your screen to decide which way to go.. simply impossible. :(

PS:
If someone else is interested in biking using their phones as GPS I recommend smartComGPS and an external bluetooth GPS (much longer battery and normally better accuracy). The problem with Sports Tracker is that you can't load tracks, so you can't try new routes.

n1ckyr well ... I took the plunge and ordered an N97. The good news is the screen is actually really good in direct sunlight, it is in fact transflective so I was very pleasantly surprised.

The bad news, the phone switched itself off randomly at least 15 times within a 2 day period. There is apparently a new firmware update that fixes a lot of the issues but I am not willing to be a beta tester for Nokia whilst they try and put right software that should have been consumer ready pre-release, so the phone is going back.

Looks like I will be sticking with my Xperia for a little while longer

Emma0522 I own a Sony Ericsson T707, the external screen is not legible in the sunlight.

e71er
half and half

one of the things that really impressed me about the E71 screen was that I could sit at a window seat in a plane and see the whole screen with half of it in direct sunlight and the other half in the dimmed cabin via backlight!

I bike a lot, don't use navigation that much now as I am close to home. But checkout Nokia Sports Tracker (still beta but works 100%) I would not leave home without it. Ever. On a bike it is nearly always more useful than navigations, since navigators, not knowing the bike roads and shortcuts are pointing you to unnecessary detours.
Thanks for the reply. I usually love the Nokia screens, it is just their new touch screen ones that don't seem to incorporate the same transflective technology as their other phones which is a shame because it is obviously possible, the iPhone does. Perhaps it is just a cost thing. I really didn't want to have to go back to a non-touchscreen was the problem :( .. seems like it is going to be iPhone for me.

When I said bike, I meant motorbike .. far too unfit for long distance cycling hehe

This is the perfect clean, high contrast theme for sunlight.

reflectivity

that's why i love my nokia e66; very good visibility in daylight.

Unregistered Tsk. Tsk... Take those sun glasses off steve.
Seriously, good appropriate article that shows that some display engineers need to get out of doors more often and sun themselves. A highly ledgible display under bright light source should be a minimum ship criteria for new products.

n1ckyr I'm glad I stumbled across this thread. I currently have an Xperia X1 and frankly, its rubbish in direct sunlight. Problem I have is I use my phone as sat nav on my bike and therefore it has to work well in direct sunlight so I can read map.

I am due for upgrade and am currently swaying between the Nokia N97 and the iPhone 3GS .. I quite like the N97 but am worried the screen is going to be as bad as my X1 whereas the iPhone I know is good in direct sunlight with its transflective screen.

Hmm .. decisions decisions ... does anyone have first hand experience of the X1 and the N97 .. very curious to know which is better in this respect?

abubasim "HTC TyTN 2 (and all previous Windows Mobile phones) "

Not entirely true. I know of two older models produced by HTC which have excellent transflective displays: O2 XDA EXEC (HTC Universal) and i-mate JAMin (HTC Prophet). I currently own the O2 XDA EXEC and find it just as good in bright sunlight as the E61i and E90 which I also own.

I almost forgot: the earlier models of the HTC Hermes (i-mate JASJAM) did also have transflective displays. The same phone, renamed to HTC TyTN, was downgraded with a transmissive display which turned completely black in sunlight.
