talhamid @slitchfield: Well you've got a point there. I think he does that just to be first. More often than not, he reports and reviews hardware that quickly fizzles out upon release, or is substantially changed from his reviewed copy.

But as I said, he is not as fast about the news and info. AAS is a far better source for it. Not that it is a choice between you guys and him, or anything.

His iphone review was a master class in journalism. The guy sure spares no feeling. I also rather enjoy the quirky Russian-English translation on his site. Don't tell me you guys don't!!!

OR as even the freaking Verkkokauppa.com says on their pre-order page for 5800 Xpress music (the same page you mention):

Ennakkotilaa jo nyt, hinta ja saatavuus vielä avoinna!
Direct word-to-word translation: Pre-order allready now, price and availebility still open!

Now stop being silly. Who cares what a webmaster of a single webstore uses as placeholder price anyway.

Ohhhh, the humanity.

I said that previously Verkkokauppa had placed the original price of the pre-sold items on display, but the 999,90 was something that I had seen but it seemed a bit odd, so I went to check it out. Once there I was told that the price will be decided by Verkkokauppa, not Nokia. So the moral of the story is, all of this will be clarified when the phone is released. As much as I want this phone, I will wait for the next higher end version that will be released. Apple will lose market share for sure with this phone.

ajck I read Eldar's article the other day, and I have to say it's significant because those guys at mobile-review don't pull any punches or show any favouritism to Nokia phones - they usually go pretty tough on them to be honest, and I've seen plenty of ciritical or unimpressed reviews of Nokia handsets. For them to show this much warmth to a Nokia handset is highly unusual, and therefore highly significant, especially considering all their experience across the entire range of phones out there.

The 5800 is a bit of a groundbreaker when you factor in the price and the Comes With Music option.

Also, I subscribe to a couple of highly active professional industry forums (MoMo London and Forum Oxford) and what's interesting is the complete *lack* of mention or discussion of the 5800. This compares to everyone (and these are telco pros) falling over themselves to salivate over the iPhone (and 3G) when they came out. It's significant because it shows how much of the iPhone is pure hot air and hype, even among people that really should know better. The 5800 is likely to be far more successful (in terms of sales) than the iPhone, and with that price point pretty influential too. But it hasn't got the Apple reality-distortion field around it, and the sexiness and the hype. And it's a better handset for it, IMHO.

Whether the price will remain 999.90 is up to Verkkokauppa, not Nokia.

Soooo if anyone has a problem with the pricing, take it up with them, not me. The telephone number is on the site. So give them a call and state your case.

Unregistered Does no one realise that the iPhone is now available as a PAYG option?

Taken from o2's website:

"Pay & Go customers can now enjoy the iPhone 3G without a monthly contract. The new iPhone 3G 8GB for Pay & Go will be available for £349.99 and the 16GB version for £399.99. It's available to buy in O2 stores and The Carphone Warehouse from 16th September.

This also includes unlimited browsing and Wi-Fi for the first 12 months after you activate your iPhone 3G*. At the end of the 12 months you can continue to receive unlimited browsing and Wi-Fi for just £10 per month. We'll notify you before the end of the 12 month period by text and you can easily unsubscribe if you choose to do so.

You'll need to use the new SIM card that comes with the iPhone 3G to get your 12 months of unlimited browsing and Wi-Fi access. If you're already with O2 Pay & Go, you can easily transfer your existing number and balance to your new iPhone SIM by completing this form. Please note visual voicemail and call merging are not available with Pay & Go. You'll also need to change your data settings to use services such as Mobile Internet. Find out how to change your data settings."

Not a bad price tbh, plus the inclusion of free web usage is quite frankly, HUGE.

So, lets not bash the iPhone as much now, k?

The price of the 5800

To all,

Those in the know and out of the know. The only reason I posted this price was 2 fold:

slitchfield Yes, we love most of Eldar's writings too, which is why we often link to them, though the one big beef I have against him is that he does tend to base 'reviews' on prototype hardware and firmware, sometimes as early as 2 or 3 MONTHS before the device actually appears in production form.

With the complexity of modern devices, you can't really form an accurate opinion of their performance and usability until most of the rough edges have been knocked off the software, IMHO.

talhamid Eldar is awesome. The guy puts his heart and soul into everything he writes and that's what sets him apart from others. The brilliant thing is that what he writes is relevant to every market in the world. With due respect to AAS, but his are the DEFINITIVE reviews for any phone. AAS comes as my prime source for news, info and overviews.

The price discussion is laughable. ANY S60 phone is better than iphone in terms of its feature set. Even if the 5800 was priced equal to iphone, it would have it beat hands down, except for the prettiness of interface and hardware itself which seems to be a solid lock for Apple.

At this price point, it is not only better than all competing touch screen phones, it is also better than the entire NSeries lineup , N-gage or no n-gage. My N82 looks fat and ugly next to it (not that 5800 is something of a beauty - it ain't). My only grudge is that they should have provided an emulator for old S60 apps, which should have included a virtual D-pad. PErhaps someone else will come up with this.

obvious but not done

Apple use one of many simple design principles to make the iphone look easy to use.

White space and large fonts. Put in lots of white space and big fonts and it always looks easier to use.

Why doesn't nokia try this? Maybe 2 view modes, new user (large fonts and limited info), experienced user (basically as it is now).

Just a simple observation.

viipottaja Sapporobaby, heh, that was, frankly, pretty funny.. going from Euro 279 without taxes to Euro 999...
05-10-2008 09:59 PM
Tzer2 Sapporobaby, you might want to do a bit of research before telling people they're idiots.

"Sports fans" indeed...

ALL of verkkokauppa's prices start at 999.90 if they haven't yet decided on a final price. They've always done that, they probably always will.

The place to find out the real price of an upcoming product is in the manufacturer's press release, and Nokia's release for the 5800 quite clearly states it's 280 euros plus taxes (which in Finland would come to about 340 euros including 22% sales tax).
05-10-2008 09:02 PM
Unregistered Sorry sapporobaby but you are wrong, and propably haven't done much shopping at Verkkokauppa.com.
999 euros is what they use for pre-order items that don't have final price yet.

For example, when I pre-ordered the Burning Crusade expansion for World of Warcraft (back in mid-2006) it had price of 999 euros, but I (obviously!) didn't pay thousand euros for a vide-game. It ended costing me 30 euros.
05-10-2008 08:22 PM
Unregistered hmmmm i cant believe that he actually thought the phone was going for 999.90 euros...nokia clearly stated 279 euros...how does that equate to 999.90 euros:-S. one must understand we are dealing with nokia, not apple. nokia doesnt lie about its device prices :-P or at least try to mask them :-P

Toblerone There was no mention of the Full QWERTY keyboard in landscape mode which can be used for texting. I think that's quite a major feature, especially over the iphone. I don't want to have to use a stylus or plectrum to text! But a full size qwerty keyboard is very welcome.
