WalkingHotSpot
Do you need to pay for a data plan with your carrier to use the wifi?

I agree with Rafe that let users have the choice. I have been using Joiku Premium and it works like a charm! Happy and totally satisfied. One thing that has got me hooked on to it is the support service. I was having trouble pairing my laptop. Lasse Maki, the CEO of Joiku, helped me on mail on the configurations et al.
Its gr8 the way it is working now. iPod, laptop everything is booom!

I've tried both (though I think its gone through an upgrade since) - in all honesty the extras bits, like SSH, are less important to me than overall stability. But as I say I'd recommend people try both and use want works for them.

You obviously have only tried the free (Light)version of Joikuspot,
the full premium version (15 Euros for lifetime licence) supports the following

WalkingHotSpot is, in my experience, more robust. It is also nearer to being a truer hotspot in terms of having better protocol / port / etc. support. There's a few thing in software (e.g. better control over who is using it etc.)
But the choice is up to you. There's a free trial of both so it's probably worth giving both a go.

I think this is better than JoikuSpot. AFAIK JoikuSpot is just http proxy? This can handle any port so you can use e.g. SSH, e-mail whatever you normally use. No any restrictions. It works like normal wlan hotspot.

Just how is WalkingHotSpot more advanced than Joikuspot premium ?
Joikuspot supports every worthwhile function that WalkingHotSpot does and has a few added advantages:
It's not only cheaper but you can connect as many different devices as you like with Joikuspot premium, WalkingHotspot limits you to five only and talks home to log the mac addresses of those devices on its servers to stop you exceeding that limit, if you do exceed that limit you need to contact their support to remove one device before you can add another
The biggest downer for me is that WalkingHotspot actually needs to talk home to work, you have to have a user account with them and the program needs to authenticate you with their server each time you use it, if for some reason it can't communicate with their server it just plain doesnt work.
None of that crap with Joikuspot Premium.

How is walking hotspot more advanced than joiku spot ? Also, doesnt joiku spot have a free lite version or something ?

Think I'll stick with JoikuSpot Premium only 15 euros for lifetime license and works perfectly.

TapRoot Release WalkingHotSpot Mobile Wi-Fi Utility
TapRoot Systems have announced the general availability of WalkingHotSpot. Similar in nature to JoikuSpot, this app will take a Wi-Fi enabled Symbian smartphone and turn it into a 'mobile' Hot Spot for other devices to connect through and get on-line. WalkingHotSpot is available for a seven day free trial, before switching to a monthly subscription of $7 (or $25 for 12 months).
