What about durability, battery life, price, and (of course), ease of use? Some of these aspects were mentioned, but they should have given top priority.

I would only focus on these things if they were dramatically different between the devices. I've used all three and can say that durability and battery life are very similar between all three. Price is up in the air, of course. And ease of use was factored into every points rating in the appropriate application area. My ratings weren't simply based on feature counts.

>>Wait for v2 or major major firmware updates.

Oh Absolutely. See also my upcoming editorial on Monday morning 8-)

malerocks "SE should really release a large screen high res UIQ device - perhaps the P990 successor "

Isn't the SE P1i supposed to be the P990i successor?

The thing that I really hate about the iPhone is the fact that the phone is going to be locked into one network supplier with a limited number of contract options. There is no way to get an unlocked version! I also don't like the fact that Apple is getting a cut of the ongoing contract revenue.

Phone makers should make the hardware and network suppliers should provide the service, this provides the customer with the greatest choice. The iPhone is a bit like buying a car from a garage and then only being able to buy your petrol from their at chain at a special rate. Not only does that limit your options for filling you car and potentially where you can go but leaves you open to being exploited big time. e.g. a 10% restocking fee if you buy it and decide you don't like it.

The iPhone costs a lot and has an expensive long term contract, it may look good now but you're tying yourself into a device for 2 years. In 2 years time it will be well out of date.

Mr Jobs seems to be trying to have his cake and eat everybody else's as well. If he is allowed to get away with manipulating the market in the way he is trying to the the customer is going to be the person who loses.

Yes the iPhone is a nice bit of kit but until you can pick which network you wish to use it on and on which contract either monthly or pay as you go that you choose then I say give it a wide berth.

can't agree

This is my personal problem, of course, but I find that Nokia a scary looking device. (Nokia Communicator series are exception, though).

terrific! Wonderful and snappy review. At the price of the iPhone you should have compared it to the E90 or N95. Also you will be aware the iPhone battery life will suffer under 3G. And Nokia are now moving to 3.5G so Apple may still be behind Nokia technology for a while. SE should really release a large screen high res UIQ device - perhaps the P990 successor

Too much plastic? The Apple iPhone vs. the Nokia E61i

OK, so I got my hands on an Apple iPhone for a while (it's had to go back now... sob). Lovely piece of kit, but what I really wanted to know was how it would stack up against the Nokia E61i (effectively one of the smartphones ridiculed by Steve Jobs as 'having too much plastic'). Smartphones Show 38 is the result. Oh, and I threw in the W950i as well, to add some music focus... Links: YouTube, MP4 format, RSS. Enjoy...
