Unregistered When using my N95 as a 3G modem I only get about 4 hours out of my battery... thats it.. batt dead! no talking.. no other stuff just 3G.. from full to flat in 4 hours. now.. why the hell didn't Nokia include Charging through the USB port? wouldn't that make sense? just one of my gripes with this phone.. I was so excited when I got it.. but now I am back using my old Sony W800i because it is so much nicer as a phone.. and my Nokia is only a modem. don't even get me started on why I dislike my New N95!

Unregistered I too had problems with my N95, it only lasted 6 hours on standby.

I flashed it to the latest firmware and stopped using the case I bought when I bought he phone. I suspect the case was pressing one of the buttons and keeping the backlight on.

It's been fine ever since. The only big battery drainer since the upgrade is using the camera.

Upgrading the firmware will delete all your data by the way.

It depends on how much you use the phone. My E70 lasts just two days, while on others it lasts 5-6 days.

Not that bad at all

Not very impressed

I hadn't heard or read much about the battery life before I got my N95 (few days ago). I was a little disappointed the first couple of days, so today I charged it to "battery full" and started my normal routine. It's probably NOT anything close to most people's, but here goes.

At home I have my WiFi lan - so it's connected to that. Out and about, I use 3g ( UMTS/HSDPA).

I leave them (WiFi and 3G) on for several reasons - basically I have IM+ installed, so I can message on the move, and I have Roadsync installed, for push mail. I also use messaging for normal pop3 mail. As a busy consultant a great deal of my business is on the phone (with a Bluetooth headset), on IM's, on Mail, on SMS. Oh, and I have it connected to a SIP server as an extension off my IP PABX for "free" (other than bandwidth charges) calls... So switching off the battery guzzlers and doing without Internet (or doing it through GPRS) isn't really an option for me.

So probably a little heavier than your average user on the battery, huh? Anyway I'm averaging only about 5 to 8 hours between charges. And I'm very irked that why on God's green earth did they not enable USB charging?? At least when I have the blasted thing hooked up to the laptop (or I need to give it a quick half hour emergency charge when a power socket's not convenient) it could've nabbed itself a top-up.

Basically, I'm going to put a charger in the car, and maybe even buy a solar charger for the beast...

But for any *heavy* users like myself... believe me you're going to suffer with battery life.

Having said that, my HP iPaq was even worse, and don't even get me started on my laptop...

What you mustn't forget, if you use this thing for everything it's capable of, is you'll be doing things hardly even possible before - so making some sacrifices in terms of battery life inconvenience is going to be necessary.

I REALLY wouldn't have cared much if the thing had been a few mm thicker/heavier and they'd beefed up the battery to something much bigger... Other than battery life, this phone went even beyond my expectations, and I'd recommend it to any road warrior...

The only thing I'd criticise Nokia for on this one would be they made a killer phone, *capable* of all these amazing features, then basically nuked the ability to *use* them extensively by not paying closer attention to the battery...

Oh well... can't have everything.

Ciao!

Unregistered I've been using the N95 for 3 weeks now, Batt only lasts until 2pm ish each day !

First 5 charges out of the box were full discharge/charge cycles, now back to normal routine of on charge all night but never switched off !

I have all services switched off other than gsm/3G (UTMS) for calls. make max 10 mins calls per day, 3 SMS !

loved my N91 for music but don't dare with my N95 as it just zaps Batt (using std 3.5mm jack H/Phones)

Have even tried setting backlight timers to lowest setting to save batt life !

Great phone for what it can do, if the batt lasts !

My fav accessory has become the Nokia CA-100 USB Charger !

have found a 1000mah batt, but thats only 50mah extra over std batt, is it worth it ?

more tests

Ok, some more test usage today (inc 2 hours train journey):
N70
- 10 mins browsing
- 32 mins talk time
- 4 sms
- 4 bars of charge left

N95
- 2.25 hours browsing
- no talk time
- 2 sms
- 2 bars of charge left

No other activity on both phones

tkao2025 My battery was a lot better today.....after not using A2DP....I think that was my problem. Hopefully future firmware will fix the massive battery usage problem when using bluetooth stereo headset.

tnkgrl For what it's worth, I noticed that battery life improved after a few full charge/discharge cycles.

Steve
Well interesting enough that the P990i with Roadsync does not seem to drain battery as bad and I can get 2 days without a charge. The battery in the P990i, I believe, is a 900mAh, which is smaller than the N95's. Also, my N80 would last a day with Mail for Exchange....now I know that's a Nokia software, so the integration is probably better, but still doesn't explain the 9 hours I got yesterday with barely using the phone. I'm testing it out with no A2DP use today and only a 3.5mm jack to see if that helps. By the way, I'm using a SE bluetooth stereo headset to listen to music. Again I'm wondering if its the integration thing.

tomsky Chag, train journeys almost always flatten the battery, even on my N73 which can do 3 days comfortably (no wifi or gps, and a bigger battery), I get on a train and 2 hours later it's flat. I think changing cells or being out of range just flattens it. That would also explain why 3g can drain it so fast as well. 3g cells aren't as common, so it's constantly looking for one, even when it has a signal.
In fact, it's the same for going into underground lecture theatres. Fully charged in the morning, and then 50 minutes later, it's down 1 bar and on the way to being flat.

battery battering

Steve,
Ah, that's interesting. My browsing was during 4 hrs train journey. Non wifi. Would that account for the drain? It'd be interesting if you could compare your usage to one involving a train journey.
Trouble is, that's when I need to browse, to eliminate boredom.

Doesn't sound right, I have to say. Unless you were in a poor network signal area and the device was having to work hard?

FWIW, after another day's data on my N95, during which I did about 15 mins of calls, 30 mins of voice-guided, screen-on GPS navigating and 20 minutes of video recording - and I still had three bars on the N95 when I got home at the end of the day. And it recharged fully in about 25 minutes. FWIW, I'm very happy with my N95 and can live with the idiosyncrasies that we've found so far.

Chag - Your right it is rubbish. Do you want to sell me your phone

Just out of interest was the surfing over 3g or WiFi?

My experience using the N80 is that the battery life is not that good but on the up side phone chargers are light and small and the batteries are very small and cheap. It pays to keep both close.
