it's not necessary

it's not necessary to instal third party voip software to reap the benefits of the N80i 's SIP compatibility. if you're in the UK, it's as easy to use voip on N80i's as it is on E60's. afaik aql.com are the only people who provide OTA configs, which is the simplest way to get started with voip. hopefully more nokias aqcuire those "i" features.

fdxd Nokia never refer to the Nokia N80 Internet Edition as N80i on their press site even. Its not a new phone launch its a software package with the phone ala 6630 music edition and N93 Golf Edition. I assume this replaces the normal N80 package.

Rafe Yes the N80i is a marketing excerise. I was a bit suprised to see it referred to as the N80i on the Nokia site (check out the press pictures for example) as previsouly marketing led phone hadn't used this shothand.. e.g. Nokia 6630 Music Edition

Lunacy

nj7 above has to be right. The existing N80 is essentially out in typical Nokia 'public beta'. There is no way it can be a new model per se. The N80 is basically unusable for VoIP and SIP as it doesn't have a useful battery for starters. If you want SIP, a decent battery and some degree of debugged OS, then get an E61. I threw my N80 back a day after getting it.

Yea... Marketing, nothing more.

chrsfrwll Taz: Thanks but I'd found that. My point was that the N80 isn't supported yet. I understood from your earlier comment that it was. The link shows it still missing as a supported phone.

Sebhelyesfarku Hmmm, interesting I'm curious that is there any hardware changes, and also, will Nokia maintain two different firmwares for 'normal' and internet edition' N80s...

petoman I think most of that improvements can be done with 3rd party software. Hope this new N80i could make the regular N80 become cheaper and buy it :-)

Correction

The N80 currently only has WCDMA 2100, not 1900+2100. I do not think that the N80i, which seems to only include software upgrades, would add another WCDMA band. A different version of the N80 (N80-3) was planned to include 1900 for the USA but it is as yet unreleased.

Ratkat If you read the full press release it also mentions about 'voip'

'Making an Internet call with the Nokia N80 Internet Edition is as easy as making a regular voice call only the call is carried over WLAN. The VoIP framework (based on the SIP protocol) is integrated into the Nokia user interface, and the Nokia N80 Internet Edition is allows for downloading compatible third party internet call applications.

previously although you could enter sip settings only the e series phones had the voip function
