So, as it turns out, the update also updates the Contacts app, which is part of the firmware; hence the reboot.

Nope, think you could be wrong, or at least only partially right.

I'm on the latest version, updated a few hours back - all working better than before, no need for a reboot, wasn't told that a reboot would be required.
