View Full Version : Microsoft should be allowed to break software

Microsoft have argued that if competitors are allowed to complain every time they make a change to Windows (a change that would break a competitor's software), then Microsoft's competitors will be able to abuse this 'power' and block progress as well as put Microsoft at a disadvantage.
This has long been an argument of blind Microsoft fanboys who think that butter wouldn't melt in Bill's mouth. They argue that Microsoft is a business like any other and should not be expected to go out of its way to help those who are in direct competition.
Are these people really as thick as their point of view would suggest, or are they simply incapable of seeing the whole picture?
Nobody is asking Microsoft to go out of its way to help competitors and their products. In fact, what I think Microsoft's competitors are asking as for Microsoft to <B>not</B> go out of its way to find ways of breaking their products.
If Microsoft want to make Windows better in a way that may possibly break some software, then that is ultimately up to Microsoft. However, the truth is that Microsoft is deliberately breaking other people's software, without adding anything to justify the change that has ensued, and refuses to tell the software maker how to work around it.
What has this to do with Symbian? Imagine, people are looking for a smartphone. They won't want Microsoft's smartphone because it's crap, but when they hear that the only phone that connects to a PC without crashing is a Microsoft Smartphone, then where will they go (though I accept the argument that Microsoft is yet to release any mobile device that can connect to a PC without crashing)?
Microsoft's sin is a sin of comission, not omission.

I hope for the day of PDA dominance. I mean why do people want their PDA's to sync with their PC? My main use of contacts and appointments is via my 9210. I think the PC Software e.g. Outlook should Sync to my 9210 not the other way around /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif.
Perhaps SyncML will be the way forward. It should cut MSoft out of the loop /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif.
However, I have to admit that in reality I dont sync appointment or contacts at all! I only ever use contacts on my 9210 and the appointments that I have on my PC at work, I normally want to be kept separate from my 9210. All I do is back up to a PC.

yoe yes, finally someone on the same wavelength.... i also always just take my contacts backup & thats it.
BUT...but then came along Active Desk one day...& my 9210 was never the same. now i use my calender, tasks..etc & even use them to sync with my outlook. Its excellant.Once you start using this its really really helpfull.
I can enter all the apointments on my comp or have my secretary do it & then just sync it to my 9210 & voila ive got my whole schedule with me whereever i go.

Say what you want, but without microsoft we wouldn't have all the things we have now.
Offcourse windows programs crash, windows ain't a program it's a complete OS. Windows commen library's helped the software boost, and i really think microsoft ain't dispensible.
The lawsuite against Internet Explorer is just bullshit, if they really want to compete with explorer then get with the program and start making compatible browsers. The best browser I've found that can somewhat come near the brilliant explorer is Opera.
Trust me windows is a brilliant peace of 'software' the ease of installing, programming ...
Don't get me wrong I'm not a blind windows lover /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif At the moment I'm using Linux for about 1 year now ...
I love the speed of linux, but I hate installing of programs, installing without getting 1 error or having 1 problem is almost a mirical /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
Windows doesn't have to go total open source ... keeping the main functions to microsoft it self helps keeping the os working /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
Microsoft helped setting standards we really need ...
I've never saw an OS that never crashed, Linux/symbian/windows/macos
We seem to be all forgetting which conforts windows is providing us.
The microsoft competition is great to get other OS's the drive to create and develop, and the followers (windows haters /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif )
But I'm still waiting and testing different OS's until one can get the ease and compatibility of the windows OS.
Other point of view
Try finding a program you want for
A small chance you'll find it, free? the linux one with nodoubt, for the mac or symbian ? almost certain you won't find a free program /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif
You can find every program you want for windows ... it has all the programs ... and hacks are free 2 ;p
It's so easy to say that microsoft sucks /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif But it doesn't /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif No OS can beat the windows OS, it doesn't crash if you use it correctly and it crashes less then you could expect for an OS that support everything.
Offcourse they are not perfect, but if you look at microsoft and windows, try thinking which functions it supports, you must admit it's brilliant /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif
Still I'm here in my linux, feeling great, But still hoping it once will have the advantages of windows, nice installs, and tons of programs /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif But even MacOS haven't established this.
What I do hope for is that microsoft developes more software for other osses. Like the microsoft Office port for the mac.
Give me an msn messenger and IExplorer for Linux and Symbian and I'll be the happiest person in linux /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif
I just hope they'll split of their OS's and software. So even when the pocket pc sucks users can still use explorer on their own favourite pda. Cause who would ever buy such buggy pocketpc pda /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif Maybe they'll fix it ... oneday /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif

I'm still laughing, still laughing, lolololol.
MICRO$OFT HAVE ORIGINATED NOTHING OF VALUE!!!!!!
They will have you believe that they single handedly invented the GUI. Hello? Anyone seen an Amiga or Atari from the mid 80s? Hell anyone heard of Apple? LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree that the best browser on the market is Opera as it's the only one to adhere to the W3C standards. Standards? I've heard of them..... (C;
Mozilla may be slow and bulky but at least it doesn't happilly run virii on your machine if you use it for e-mail.
M$ do not realise we want computers for tools, not migreanes (or however you spell it). I want a computer I can use how I like and still have an uptime of 365 days a year. I want a system that's easy to configure and doesn't waste half a harddrive for itself. I want apps where the full office suite is lass than 40MB, I want SPEED!!!! I want it to f*cking look good too. I have this and it's not thanks to M$ at all, I'm happy in my M$ free world, as you should be too.
P.s. linux is shat.

You're a Linux user? Or Mac? /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif Think that I acctually gonna try a Mac out soon. They have Office and UnrealTournament so I'm set ;p
I've just realized that modern computers running m$ can finally run msdosprompt at good speeds /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif So In about 12 years Win 95 will work as fast as it should be /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Linux is slow and bulky and Macs are too expensive, I'm a BeOS user.
01-06-2002, 06:12 PM
Linux is fast, but linux is console, the x-server software is what makes it slow /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif
That been said, I'm interrested to try this beos. But haven't find actual info of what it is, how it works, how it looks like and etc ... But I'll keep looking /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif If you say it's that fast then I have to try it ;p
The search is on /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif

My original post was not to suggest that Windows is crap. far from it, it has made my life easier, I quite like it (sorry Switchblade).
My point was, should Microsoft be allowed to deliberately put something into their code in order to break other technologies?
The Microsoft Smartphone is by far the worst choice anybody could make in a smartphone. It is dire on so many levels, but people will buy it if Microsoft can ensure that nobody else will be able to get their equipment to run on Windows.

and maybe one example is pc suite does not run smoothly under windows os, it has to hang once in a while. i don't know if u guys experience this. But this is my observation, when i copy or move files across the serial connection, the hanging or blue screen has to pop-out once in a while. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif

I see your point Tankerx /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif I just think (hope) that microsoft won't have the power to do so. If you look at the software side of the issue, it would be hard to just filter out only pda's en smartphones. On the other hand, I think microsoft will lose the lawsuit if they try something like you say.
Relevant issue Has anyone been able to connect a 9210 to a IR port on a laptop running XP ?
06-06-2002, 02:11 AM
Sorry to dissapoint, but that's "yet another windoze xp issue" (Trademarked and copyrighted by Micro$oft as you'd expect).
Be Inc. the creators of BeOS are now owned by Palm who have decided not to continue BeOS support (slags), but plans are afoot at <!-- BBCode auto-link start -->www.openbeos.org (http//www.openbeos.org)<!-- BBCode auto-link end --> (or .net/.com I forget which) for an open source BeOS. Also check <!-- BBCode auto-link start -->www.bebits.com (http//www.bebits.com)<!-- BBCode auto-link end --> and <!-- BBCode auto-link start -->www.beonline.de (http//www.beonline.de)<!-- BBCode auto-link end --> for downloads.
I believe it's true that Microsoft leverages its power to 'help make other people fail' by using its desktop monopoly. This is one of the reasons why it is so despised as a corporation - because of its 'unfair', 'illegal' or 'anti-competative' stance, depending on your point of view.
I wouldn't worry about Microsoft in the long term, systems tend to fall apart just when they seem most powerful (like the old Soviet Union) - and they are creating so many enemies globally. They have a simple strategy of working with companies and stripping them of their specialist technology and then bringing out their own competing MS product. Dreamcast -> XBox. TabletPC -> MS TPC. Who knows, maybe they'll bring out their own MS smartphone. Anyway they've closed their smartphone opperation in Sweden (the deal was originally to develop smartphone network-side software, etc - now they have the technology they say they don't need 'Scandinavian' know-how.
Microsoft are like the Borg (from Star Trek - I'm not a fan, just seems like a good analagy) because they try to assimilate everything.
The biggest mistake anyone competeing against Microsoft can make is **assume** they will win against MS just because they have creative ideas, better technology, or a superiour business strategy.
Sony were about to use BeOS in an iMac style machine which was pretty cool looking (it was an internet and media tool basically), but it seems to have been scrapped - probably because it infringes on MS's strict licensing rules. A couple of other Japanese companies tried to bring out BeOS machines or dual boot ones too (to add to that Apple didn't end up using it). The 'best' doesn't allways win - Symbian will have to fight all the way!
06-06-2002, 05:19 PM
BeOS was looking good until Apple stopped other people producing PPCs and then it closed up and went proprietry. A number of companies shipped PC that had BeOS installed on them, but due to M$ rules and regs the users weren't allowed to know it was there, not in manual, no dual boot, no nothing. Highly anti-competitive behaviour from M$ there.
Yup. It's crazy, but Microsoft doesn't have any real desktop OS competition anymore. The consequences of this will be huge for the US economy in the long term. That's what I believe anyway. They have become a truely despised organisation. It's quite sad, but I read polls of the top most hated people of the 20th century and B. Gates makes it somewhere inbetween Stalin and Hitler. That's a very sad history to leave behind. Anyway - life's too short. Who gives -

I don't know? How much is a Virgin rail ticket fron Penzance to Edinburgh? /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
Anyway I've just made my gesture against the dark forces anb brought a copy of Star Office 6.0 /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif. The new version looks very good and I think it a real threat to MS Office now. Also as its free for educational purposes (including students at home) prehaps it will be used in schools? It should save them pots of money and allow the students to use the same software at home, legally for no extra cost /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif.

I've converted from Linux to BeOS 5 a week ago, it runs very fast but why they call it an media os? /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif
I can't play any video files as fast as I could running linux/windows. Divx is totally not watchable (sound is slower then movie) mpg and avi's have reduced quality.
And one thing I really hate /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif when 'exploring' my harddisk/floppy/cdrom every time I click to open a map it is opened in an other window.
Oh well I'll give it a try for another month or so /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif Thx for pointing this OS out /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif Love how fast it is /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
Btw Opera and Flash is SHAREWARE, ain't that f*ckt up sh*t /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif
