This may seem a stupid question, but I can't seem to work out how to have my contacts displayed FIRST NAME, SURNAME. Can someone tell me how I change from the default SURNAME, FIRST NAME?

Go into your contacts.
Click on the pull down menu at the top of the screen (where is says Contacts V this will bring up a menu - BUT, you will have to scroll down to the bottom of the menu, then you'll find the Settings sub menu, select Sort By and you'll find what you are looking for . . . . .

*Just do this before you want to sync your P990i with Outlook for the first time. :)

I got my P990i and wanted to put 228 contacts from my 'P910 Contacts' subfolder in Outlook across to my new 'empty' P990i - you can imagine my frustration when all my contacts arrived on my phone with surname first!!
