Sony Ericsson's P800 To Reach First Markets Soon
STOCKHOLM (Dow Jones)--Sony Ericsson has begun shipping its P800 camera phone, a spokesman for the mobile-phone maker said Wednesday, after several months delay.
The phone should appear first in stores of the Nordic region, Italy and Hong Kong, Sony Ericsson spokesman Peter Bodor said. It won't reach other markets until early in 2003, he said.

The P800, which includes a digital camera and functions as a personal digital assistant as well as a phone, was originally due to hit the market by the end of September, but Sony Ericsson delayed the launch without explanation. It promised to have it out before Christmas.

The phone is one of several new models from Sony Ericsson that analysts say must be successful if the company, a joint venture created by combining the phone units of Telefon AB LM Ericsson (ERICY) and Sony Corp. (SNE) last year, is to reverse the slide in its market share and reach profitability.

Sony Ericsson was the world's fifth largest phone maker in the third quarter of 2002, with a market share of around 5%.

But some days before they said that the network providers will handle everything.
What is the service centers thing about then....

Release News Update from www.mobil.nu

can anybody translate this:

Sony Ericsson P800 börjar säljas nästa vecka
2002-12-11 15:05

THANKS

rough translation

Sony Ericsson P800 available for sale during next week
...
Sony Ericsson combined communicator and camera phone P800 will be in the shops during the coming week. Per Alksten confirmed this on a press meeting today.

That means already monday could you get your hands on Sony Ericssons new flagship phone

Builtin camera are one of the hottest functions in the new mobile (i personally do not agree ;-) But the P800 is also a communicator fully equiped with software for text editing, spreadsheet functions, web browser, e-mail, MP3 player and more.

We have already started to test the P800, and you can read our judgement in the coming issue. The price is expected to be between 8000-9000 SEK including VAT (€870-€950) - without subscribtion to a provider.

best

Wait a minute, how can the MMC problem effect UK only phones? Or did i misunderstood something?

Sorry I didn't make myself clear, I ment it was due for release in September and now we've waited this long:

long................longer..............longer.... ...........it's released this week.......................sorry maybe next month..................longer....................l onger......................well actually we're not sure when it's out.......................longer.................. ........................................bit longer.....................longer................. ......NOW.......????

Just damn annoying, all because of the problems they were having putting the memory card in 'hot'.

I know the feeling. If you remeber,it was something similar with the 7650,but not this much of a hastle.

13-12-2002, 02:37 AM
Lets not forget that SE were not 'fixing' a problem with a memory stick, they were INTEGRATING a memory stick into the phone. It was not originally going to have one. That's a fairly huge design modification and not surprising that its forced SE to delay the release etc.

Well, haven't heard when Australia will get it but I'm sure it'll be a long time before the carriers are satisfied with it enough to sell it on contract. This is what happened with the R380s which I have. It took months.

On the SE pages they describe P800 and P802. Only at P802 they mention symbian os, see http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?page=GIS
It can't be true, can it, that P800 is just a phone without user being able to install any applications?

:)
15-12-2002, 01:14 PM
No the p800 can install applicatoins. OFcourse it can, with already Handy Safe out for the p800 and that remote control. :)
No way nobody would make such a great phone without the ability to install applications! :D
And the p800 is using Symbian OS, 7.0 :)

Phew, I'm relieved.
I must say that P800 is a tempting device (not that I've seen it yet, but...)
Guess I have to go and see it at a store next week (since I am one of the lucky ones to live in a country where they will be selling it).
BTW, how is the RAM situation in P800?

:)
15-12-2002, 01:56 PM
The RAM is 12 mb, and there's also the Memory stick DUO. Which is currently up to 128 mb ( i think, i dunno where you can get it though, maybe 128 is in really near future, 64mb now i guess :-?)
You also get a 16mb memory stick DUO with it :)

15-12-2002, 11:10 PM
Does anyone know any good site with apps for P800? I have my P800 quite a while right now and I'll prepare CD with polyphonic ringtones and wallpapers for P800, but that will be sweet to add some shareware apps to this CD.

GhostDog
16-12-2002, 12:47 PM
I dont think that there are any shareware apps for the p800,or that there will be any soon or ever :)

For those who have gotten this device, how do you find the handwriting input? I am used to the PalmOS graffiti handwriting functionality for jotting down notes and missed this when I migrated to a Nokia 9210.

Well,i haven't tried it or anything, but the roumor is that the writing recognition on the p800 is the most advanced,so far.

Damn i realy want the phone !!

but if the price will be 700-650 euro it will be good for me
