I've just bought a memory card and a pop-port to 3.5mm jack for my E61 so i thought i'd share my experience here if other are interested in buying such things.

- Memory card: i originally wanted to buy a MyMemory branded 2GB card from http://www.mymemory.co.uk/ but they refused my French Mastercard (that really gets me, more and more uk shops are refusing foreign credit cards now. Why paying a premium for a Mastercard if i can only use it in my own country?). So i headed over to http://www.mobymemory.com/ and got myself a 2GB Sandisk card (the normal one not the Ultra II one) for £38 inc. delivery so that turned out to be just £2 or £3 more than the MyMemory card. Ordered at 3pm on tuesday, received on wednesday morning even though i had chosen the slowest delivery which was supposed to take 3 to 5 days. Excellent. The card works perfectly in my E61, i've packed it with high quality video and audio files, no problems at all. Only thing is that my laptop's SD card reader doesn't recognize the card for some reason. Not such a big problem since the E61 can be used as a USB mass storage device.

- Pop-port to audio jack adapter: don't get the official Nokia one. £13 + shipping for what is after all just a basic cable is a complete rip-off. I got mine for £5.50 inc. delivery from http://www.mobilepalace.co.uk/
Once again, next day delivery even though i didn't ask for it. The adapter works fine with the phone but i'm very disapointed with the sound quality so i'm glad i didn't spend a fortune in an adapter. The bass sound really strange, can't really find a word for it and the trebles are just plain awful, just like a 64kb/s MP3 even though all my music files are 224kb/s ACC files ripped directly from the original CDs. No threat to the iPod at all. So far for this over hyped "convergence" thing.

Beware, i've just realized now that the adapter from mobilepalace is *not* stereo. Not such a bid deal since the E61 can't really be used as an MP3 player but if you want to watch movies with a stereo soundtrack, then you'll need to find a strereo adapter.

Exactly what I'm doing except I'm getting the Nokia AD-41 adaptor. I've already got the memory card, I'm just waiting on the adaptor to arrive...I've already got my e61 sync'd with my G5 so I'm ready to go with iTunes...

When you'll have received your adapter, could you please try it with a strereo track and tell us whether it is strereo or just just mono? And also comment on the quality of the sound since on my E61 the sound is just awful. The cable doesn't have any influence on the sound quality but i wonder whether it is just my phone which is so bad or if this affects all the E61.

The FAT32 trick is interesting and... weird. The memory card file system type and the audio quality are two completely unrelated things and i can't see how on earth one could have any influence on the other. I would have given it a try nevertheless but my laptop which was the only computer with an SD card reader i had access to just died. And it wasn't able to read my card anyway. I formated my card on the E61 though. It doesn't say in which format it formated it but i would assume FAT32.

So can you confirm that the sound coming out of your E61 is stereo (that it, you can tell the left and right channels apart)?

My E61 sounded a bit rough until i discovered the equaliser... have you tried changing the settings in the bundled player? Anyway, I think that the unit would benefit from a new sound program, such as a winamp that has a graphic eq.

Thanks for pointing that out. I hadn't even seen it even though it was there in the menu for me to see. I've also found the "set as ringtone" menu item. Nice touch. The equalizer didn't help at all though. It does change the sound a bit but doesn't make it any better. Some settings (especially Hip-Hop and Rock) make it even a lot worse.

I did a side-by-side comparison with my iPod using the same file and my etymotics earphones. The result is that between the iPod and the E61, it's day and night. On the iPod, the sound is natural, detailed and "well-balanced". On the E61, the sound is agressive with very little bass and absolutely terrible trebles. The worst is with the Hip-Hop setting, it makes the E61 sound even worse than a poundshop walkman. I couldn't listen to that more than a few minutes.

I'm really starting to wonder whether my E61 is defective. The thing is that it doesn't sound like it's defective to me. It just sounds like a really poor digital to analog converter.

If anybody living near Derry (N. Ireland) has an E61 and/or a Nokia adapter and would like a free pint, PM me and we'll go and have a pint while doing a listening session ;)

Hey elp, I didn't see the eq there at first either. I just bought Nokia pop-port HS-31 headphones ( eg http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Genuine-Nokia-HS-31-Headset-Amber-Gold-N70-N91-Mp3-oZ_W0QQitemZ180010440853QQihZ008QQcategoryZ42409QQ cmdZViewItem ), after comparing them to the HS-23s which sounded more tinny and less bass delivery (only problem is the cream colour isn't quite my bag, but then again it's about the sound) and I am finding the E61 sound quite OK. Still looking forward to a S60 3rd sound proggy with a fully adjustable eq though. Wouldn't mind a Guinness but am in Sydney, so it may have to wait...
