View Full Version : SmartMovie headphone hiss
zerob_cool 04-11-2005, 09:16 AM Hi. I got the 3230 a few weeks ago (better late than never) and its been fine so far (apart from the damn elusive beep! ) but I have found when running SmartMovie through the headphones there is an annoying background hiss.
I know that its because SmartMovie basically ramps the phone volume to max and THEN limits it digitally, so there is always a hiss, but there must be a way to fix it. Does anybody know a way, or can recommend a decent player without a hiss? Its odd though, the sound seems fine through the phone's speaker (no hiss) but it is a bit tinny, but what can you do.
Any help appreciated.
zerob_cool 08-11-2005, 09:52 AM So does everybody get this problem then? I don't expect a fix. Please post a reply even if you get the same problem. At least then I know if its normal for the software/phone, and mine isn't faulty. Or direct me to a relevant thread if there is one, as I can't find one anywhere.
zerob_cool 10-11-2005, 03:28 PM Anyone?
Please, please please post if you have the same problem, even if you don't have a fix. Then I know its not my phone.
rulirahm 11-11-2005, 03:58 AM Try to upgrade ur fw maybe? or u can ask smartmovie maybe a bug being discused in there?
zerob_cool 17-11-2005, 01:23 PM How do you go about upgrading your firmware?
rulirahm 18-11-2005, 12:56 AM How do you go about upgrading your firmware? If u did bought the phone with authorized NOKIA's store and the warranty still running then go to authorized NSC (NOKIA Service Center), also called NCC (Nokia Care Center) & NPC (Nokia Professional Center) and u will get the upgrade with free of charge. If the warranty has expired, u will get 50% of discount. But if u did bought the phone from black market, AFAIK the cost wil be $10.

Well I live in the UK so it will probably cost about £50 (hehe:D ) and I don't know where the nearest 'Nokia' shop is near me. Nearest one I KNOW is 2.5 hours drive away where I used to live. Bit far to drive though. I'll have a look around. I got my phone 100% officially, from a leading mobile network provider on a free upgrade, so hopefully the FW upgrade will be free. On the other hand I, have a fair bit of dodgey stuff on my phone, so I might not upgrade just yet :frown: Cheers for the help anyway.
rulirahm 19-11-2005, 03:32 PM Take a look on NOKIA site http://www.nokia.com, pick ur country and I think the list of NOKIA shop/repair was there.
Don't forget to take ur phone's warranty card to get the free of charge. Good luck !
dotmilind 23-11-2005, 06:40 AM the sound quality of nokia 3230 is very bad. You cant listen to mp3s. Every kind of audio is acompanied with hiss. Infact even the beep the phone makes when u push the joystick around is accompanied with hiss if u listen to it using headphones. And i dont think upgrading firmware will fix the problem since its related to audio output issues
Tell me what you think
zerob_cool 25-11-2005, 09:22 AM I partly disagree. MP3s on my phone, while being bad quality and mono like you say, are O....K. What I mean is there is no hiss.
There is a hiss on most sounds though, yes, so I agree with you there.
However, as I have mentioned, there is ONLY a hiss while watching things through Smartmovie when I'm using the HEADPHONES, but the sound is strangely fine when using the phones loudspeaker.
I've read somewhere that the hiss is caused by the Smartmovie software increasing the phone's HARDWARE volume to the max, and THEN limiting it with Smartmovie's SOFTWARE.....but because the volume is being limited, it is still effectively at max volume as far as the phone is concerned, hence the hiss, which you get on practically any piece of electrical equipment when its audio is output at full volume.
Its just strange that the hiss can't be heard through the phone's loudspeaker.
Anyway, let me ask a different question and approach the problem from a different angle. Does anybody use video viewing software on the 3230, other than Smartmovie, and NOT get a hiss when using the standard Nokia headphones?

Yeah I thought that was probably the case, but was just checking as its just an appauling flaw in the phone! I've got a new MP3 player now anyway, so the novelty of watching vids/listening to MP3s on my 3230 has worn off anyway. Cheers for the help anyway you two.
