In which Steve realises that your smartphone should always help and never get the way of real life, and muses the fact that there's really no such thing as the perfect mobile device for everybody.

Someone is bound to say it, so it might as well be me...

"can't we have warm apple pie?"

On a serious note, it all comes down to what you want to use the device for - personally I want a phone with the PDA functionality second. You, however, may want a PDA which can also make calls.

Much as I hate to say it, UIQ is best placed here - with it's on-screen keypboard (or in the case of the P910 and P990 on the phone), it may prove to be the way to go for fast "on the fly" entry.

Of course, handwritten, post-processed, scribblings are even better. One day a smartphone device will properly support this!

Steve,

I agree with Stu
The best solution
right now
Is UIQ!

Wasn't that cute!

That reads suspiciously like a piece I did some years back going from the 9210 to the then relatively recent 3650. All a case of the large screen and keyboard make the device far far better.

hmm. i disagree about UIQ being good for on the fly. granted this is based on using the p800 for 13 months. i cant tell you how many car accidents i nearly got into since the thing didnt have predictive text. and then when the keypad broke? oi. badness.
so maybe those are p800 specific issues that the 900 and esp the 910 addressed. but...

maybe whats needed is a t9 implementation that allwos for speed entry - anyone ever use the old Apple Newton? it had a speed handwriting mode where you could go back after jotting things down and re-interpret your scribbles as words. in a t9 environment i'm picturing having your unspellable words just get saved as the numbers. then you can go back and using t9 re-figure out what it was you were thumbing in.

The Newton is the exact thing I had in mind when I mentioned "post-processed" handwriting entry.
