It's coming up as a dead link, I'm afraid.

Nice report btw Steve, and you were far more polite about SonyEricsson's apparent contempt for the community than I would have been...

Well, in their (very slight) defense, they were probably quite busy in those last few days and they DID email me before the meet. It's just that they left it so late that I'd already shut my PC down and left for the meet. I could have checked my email during the meet on my smartphone, of course, but somehow in all the bustle and chat I never had a spare moment!

Ah well. They were nice enough to us all at the Show, let's give them the benefit of the doubt this time round.

There's one more factor, and that's that the P990 was in such awful shape software-wise, the techies in the room (OK, so that's all of us) would have ripped the product to shreds. They'll need something a whole lot more robust before they show it to power users, methinks....

Hmm - was it really as bad as that? Admittedly, they weren't letting people play with them on the SE stand. Fears of crashing, perhaps?

Indeed. I crashed the P990 about seven times in 45 mins, and I wasn't even trying hard. To give you an example of how unfinished the software is, the camera shows a viewfinder image but the shutter function doesn't work yet.

Full marks to them for showing the device in this state though, I'm guessing that they insisted on the general public not handling them because they just wouldn't understand about development times, beta versions etc.

Its strange how people can gain different opions about a device. In this Symbian One report (http://www.symbianone.com/content/view/2378//) about day 2 of the show they state the following

"the day started with a hands on look at the P990. While Sony Ericsson were describing the demonstration device as 'missing a few lines of code' it seemed pretty stable and complete."

and in regards to the camera

"The camera was also very impressive. Here Sony Ericsson have continues the design style used in some of its feature phones. When the P990 is used as a camera it is held horizontally and looks and feels like a digital camera. The camera also show the attention to detail in the P990's design, as the camera lens has a rotating cover that activates the camera application when it is opened."

I just suspect your a better Beta tester Steve ;)
