If I have a phone on a Vodaphone UK contract will a Vodafone PAYG SIM work in it?

Should do - only changing networks would be a problem but if you're just going from contract to PAYG things should be fine.

This is my fault, miscommunication - he is trying to use a Virgin SIM in a Vodafone locked phone.

Next question - who is cheapest for unlocking this phone, and cann it be done remotely without access to a Vodafone SIM?

You don't need access to any SIMs to unlock a phone.

I don't know how much it will cost you, but most places can do phones for about £10. I *think* the X can be done remotely. i.e. you tell them your IMEI and they then give you the code to type in.
