View Full Version : TomTom Mobile and the Nokia 6630
messus 30-11-2004, 04:46 PM Have anybody tested TomTom Mobile with the Nokia 6630??
TomTom (so far) only supports this software on the Nokia 6600,

I know the Nokia 6630 is running on Symbian OS8 and the

yes, there is a backward compatibility :D most of the applications for Symbian 7 wil be running on version 8 too ;)

Most yes... But can you CONFIRM that TomTom Mobile is working on the 6630?
It is decisive for me if I am gonna buy the phone!

To be honest with you, I don't really like the Nokia 6630. It has good specs,
but still missing FM-radio and missing a camera in the front of the phone for
3G-video-conferancing (Why else would you really be needing 3G instead of
Edge??) like the SE Z1010 (it's too cumbersome to be dragging around the
video-craddle for it). Also it has a weird and cumbersome design which I don't like,
with the round shape in the bottom. BUT, since there are not many other
alternatives right now, I am playing with the thought of going for it, and keep
it until the 3230 with Edge/FM-radio, or the new 3G flagship 6680 arrives.
TomTom is an amazing piece of software, and I have tried it on an Nokia 6600.
Wayfinder and Route66 are in my opinion NOT comparable, and a smartphone
that is not capable of running TomTom Mobile is out of the question for me.
So, anybody who have tried TomTom Mobile on the 6630? Plz let me know!

omg.... Fm radio is useless /in my opinion/ and the second camera.... its more comfortable to call with camera stand than hold the phone in you hand all the time, and i dont think, that you are able to hold it in a stable position :D and if there is 3G in your country, most of your calls will not be videocalls, just calls just like in GSM :D its really interesting how can an only one application decide,if the phone is good,or not for you :D
enickson 01-12-2004, 03:32 PM Actually, the missing FM radio isn't a big deal for those who want it. You need to have a headset for the antenna to function and Nokia instead offer a new radio headset. This headset gives any Nokia phone an FM radio. If anyone truly wants radio, just buy that headset.

That's the same as saying why use a mobile phone when its more confortable to use a fixed phone confortably seated on the sofa...
I think videocalls are one of the biggest advantages of 3G and that a second should be in the phone or maybe just one and some sort of shell phone like the 6260
I am thinking to buy this phone because I want to move into the symbian world and its the best phone at the momment. But I would'nt mind having the same model without 3G and less expensive, since I think almost nobody will be using 3G functionality at the moment (except maybe newsreporters and people who work for mobile phone networks :) )

laugh as much,as you can,as much,as you wish... but try to think about it... second camera,videocall..... for how long will you frequentky use this ? two weeks ? maybe more.... but its the same, like with cameras on phones, for the first some weeks you shoot photos all the way,all the time, and than you maybe forget about it,that you have an integrated camera... but maybe you are a different person and you will use it every day twice, than iam so sorry... :D

Got my phone last Friday 3rd Dec and so far no probs. Except that the RS-MMC for my nokia 6600 is no good (piss me off) so have two 1G cards RS-MMC that I can't use. The reason is that the voltage. Must get RS-MMC with dual voltage and which operates at 1.8v for it to work in the 6630.
Ordered one such card and will arrive tomorrow. If it works will install Tomtom and Route 66 on the 512MB card and see if it works.
Check back on this forum tomorrow to see if it works and to find out if n-gage games work on it also!!!
shinken17 07-12-2004, 04:53 PM Can confirm Blz & Ngage games do work.
Only tried Pyou & Sonic so sar & they run sweet. Sonic looks & sounds better than on the 6600 & u can actualy read the options on the main screen.
Tried to upgrade the memory to 64MB from Voda but they wouldn't as they had none & on the phones box it says 32MB rs MMC :-(
claudio 07-12-2004, 05:08 PM hey can u tell wht is "pyau $ sonic ".

I thought that too but I'm not sure how yours is package but mines has a vodafone packaging around the orginally nokia box! It the vodafone packaging which stated the 32MB card not the nokia box. Double check that though...
Will let you know when I claim mine one tomorrow hopefully!
By the way did you get the video stand with your package?
shinken 17 08-12-2004, 04:52 PM My box has voda all over the front & sides & only proper Nokia on the back (no extra box inside).
phone £120 on their promotional £40 a month 500 free mins taraff & I did get the video stand.
Interested 09-12-2004, 02:11 AM Where do you get ngage games on the net?

Not sure about the rules of this forum so not gonna post links to them but heres a tip.
Sign up for yahoo and then do a search on the yahoo groups for 3650, 6600 7650 and you'll find shed loads...

Yea its a bummer
ered89789 05-01-2005, 09:51 PM YES it works.
I have tested it with the london map and it WORKS.
fannypad 05-01-2005, 11:46 PM This is most interesting...
I'd love to know how big the TomTom UK software is, as it comes on an MMC card which the 6630 cannot use, and seeing as you've tried it and it works then it must be able to fit on the 64MB DV RS-MMC that comes with the phone.
How easy is it to copy the TomTom software from the original card to another one?
And would it be theoretically possible to only purchase the Bluetooth GPS box for £100-odd and use it with "shared" software?
coolice 06-01-2005, 01:30 AM Hey,
I think you'll find the TomTom tested above is the Street Maps version, not TomTom Mobile which needs 100mb just for the UK map alone.
TomTom Mobile comes pre-installed on a 256mb MMC from TomTom and so will not fit on the puny 32/64mb DV RS MMC's we have.
You'd just manage to get the application itself on the MMC with no maps to use.
Waiting patiently for bigger DV's to come

Hey,
It is very easy to copy the TomTom software to another MMC to use. Some people have had problems, but I think their's was that they hadn't truned on "view hidden files" before selecting all and copying to the new mmc.
What I was doing with my 6600 was running both SatNav apps from one 512mb rs mmc, TomTom & Route66. I purchased an original TomTom BT GPS unit from Ebay for £100 and this ran perfectly with the both apps.
This is exactly what I am going to try once I have got a man enough rs mmc for my 6630, although I am going to try another GPS unit as I sold my TomTom one & 512 mmc about a week ago.

akacheesy 26-01-2005, 12:11 PM Has anyone tried using Tom Tom mobile on the Nokia 6260?
Getting the software onto a new MMC is simple? Do you just copy all the files then transfer it using bluetooth?
Any help would be appreciated
Bubski 29-01-2005, 10:11 PM I managed to get it working... just ... on a Vodafone 1984 lock down :)
I copied the MMC to the PC and then copied it onto the DV RS MMC ... I was lucky my card reader worked on the newer low voltage card as PC suite did not like copying the 'system' folder :con?
Also had to enable install settings within App manager.
Only prob is it appears to work the first time.... but when restarting it'll request the passcode for the Bluetooth GPS receiver and will reboot the phone :frown: :con?
Removing the memory card seems to sometimes fix the problem but it all seems a bit hit and miss ;)
I've even write protected all the files on the Card to no avail .. maybe missing some obvious setting.
The Traffic worked too over 3G :)
Once working it seems stable enough just the intermittant issue of Bluetooth bonding
Any ideas please ?
Bubski 30-01-2005, 12:11 AM All sorted now :D
The Bluetooth GPS need to be paired and I couldn't remember the code.... :o
I managed to guess it and no problems connecting repeatedly now :D :D
I'm using a 128mb RS MMC card, do need more though as no space for video now... at least they are hotswappable unlike 6600 :)
The TomTom 3D map screen updates are far more acceptable than the 6600 too due to the faster processor :) :)
I'm so pleased I'm going to have some wine
Now to try and sort the ringtone issue .. vodafone are devils :frown:
fannypad 01-02-2005, 04:19 AM Glad to hear it's working fine :)
You say you're using a 128MB card; I have one too. Exactly how much space does the TomTom software and the UK map take up together?
As for the ringtones limitation, it's simple to get around.
You can either convert the mp3s to AAC format using Apple iTunes, or convert them to mp4 files using RealPlayer. You can then set them as ringtones and they'll still show up in the Media list just as any other mp3.
Another solution (and a better one in my eyes) is to use the latest version of OggPlay (1.6.2) which supports setting Ogg Vorbis files as ringtones. Download it here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=86146&package_id=124176&release_id=277161
It's also an excellent free MP3/AAC/Ogg Vorbis player which outputs in 44.1KHz STEREO on the 6630.
I convert my mp3s into 64kbit/s Ogg files and play them with OggPlay. The quality is identical to 128kbit/s mp3s, with half the file size. With the 128MB card I can fit over four hours of decent quality tunes on my phone along with all the apps I need.
To convert mp3s to Ogg Vorbis format, use dBpowerAmp: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm along with the Ogg codec plugin from the codec page on the same site.
Nice, fast and free. Lovely.

i do too..ogg hands down beat acc,mp3...the best...sounds sooo clear at 64kb
Bubski 02-02-2005, 09:12 PM Ta for the help fannypad :)
The maps take up about 118mb with Traffic Update to 4.43
I need a 256mb at least now .... have not looked.. bit poor :frown:
I'll give OGG a go .... made the mistake of using vodafone's 'real ringtone service' :icon13: 16 freakin seconds and it's crud quality.... at least they could try to fade it in and out.. pfft
TTM
Seems there still is an issue with the Bluetooth pairing... got me to South Wales though with Traffic working intermittantly today.
but
I have to delete the pairing each time, else it fails when starting TomTom and resets the 6630 when it asks for the bluetooth code again
After the reset the pairing has disappeared and you have to start again.
I'm sure on the 6600 the pairing happened without any manual intervention and it never forgot either ... :con?
Bet it's another feature exclusive to us lucky 'vodafone owners'
Going back to TomTom on the 6600 was a bit s-l-ow on the screen update / menu selection screens  still perfectly adequate though :)
Bubski 02-02-2005, 09:58 PM OggPlayer is excellet and does everything on 'vodafone' as does dmc (no connection etc )
They really are good quality at 64k too .. brillant software !!
A very happy 'vodafone' owner :D

ARRGH!!! NOOOOOO!!! :o
You played right into their hands mate, this is exactly the reason why they made a half-arsed attempt at restricting mp3 ringtones. If someone as clued up as you resorted to paying god knows how much for a piss poor ringtone from them, then I truly feel for the masses of great unwashed lining their greedy conniving pockets
Deep breath...
Anyway, glad you found OggPlay useful, it's a great little app :)
And 256MB dual-voltage cards will be in the retail channel very soon, so I'll probably be needing some TomTom advice when they do ;)
Take care

Nope, I have an Orange 6630 and I have the same issue, can VERY occasionally reastart during use which can be annoying.
If anyone find an updated version or a fix for this...you know what to do ;)
whiskeybelly20 07-03-2005, 09:00 PM Um..
I just got my 6630 on Onrange in the UK, and wow... makes my old (hemhem 2001) Nokia 6210 an antique!
anyway, I've been over to the Tomtom web site and cannot seem to find a price (or be able to buy) this Tom Tom Mobile. :icon4:
Can Someone tell me where to buy and how much?
For me it would probable be a bit of a toy at the moment, As I'm not a sales rep and dont do hour of driving in area I don't know. However I do go on long holiday trips (2,500 miles in Scotland Last year in 10 days) so this could be a very usefull toy.
I currently have a Garmin GPS3Plus which is good, but not really ment for a road map navigator. :icon2:
Just an odd question.. could I put waypoints into tomtom other thant road destinations? (as in the side of a mountain footpath).
how good do you find the screen on the phone for navigating? How good is this tomtom??
thanks for your help.
readbmr 07-03-2005, 10:16 PM works great
Can anyone tell me a good gps reciever to get to use TomTom i should get my 6630 this week.
readbmr 13-03-2005, 09:55 PM yes works all ok on mine, i have 6630 and you will need card reader to transfer over to a dv rs mmc card 128mb minimum...hope that helps...
Ok so patience has never been my greatest virtue so i've decided to sell my brand spanking new Holux GR231 Reciever in order to get one that definatly works with TomTom on a 6630, so if anyone can list good GPS recievers which work with ease on the Nokia's and TomTom it would be much appreciated. TIA.
Prolinks 29-03-2005, 01:04 PM Those that have tomtom working on their 6630, can i ask you what firmware you guys have? and is it a generic firmware or network branded.
I ask as i cant for the life of me get tomtom to work, put it on the memory card correctly and it is loaded on my phone but for instance when you press the button for "i agree" or press the button for menu's etc it freezes and nothing happens. What i then have to do is press the red button to go to the phones menu then press and hold the blue button on the left of the phone then select tomtom, it then loads up with the next screen, i.e. menus or the screen after "i agree"
Is this problem firmware related do you think? Tested the 256mb dv rs mmc card (with adapter) on another phone (6600) and it works flawless.
Any ideas ?

duich 23-05-2005, 10:37 AM Does anyone use TomTom Mobile with Nokia 6630 and the Nokia GPS Modul Nokia LD-1W? I can't get them to work. I also have the Patch for using all GPS Recievers but still no work. Tomtom app itself works fine but i didnt connect to my bt reciever. The app aks me to turn on bluetooth but then nothing happens.
I also tried to connect manually to the GPS Modul in Connections/Bluetooth/Paired Devices. But there is no Option to connect.
Any Ideas???
PS: The GPS Modul works very fine with Route66 and Wayfinder
Stevie_nottm 23-05-2005, 12:50 PM Ive been looking for a connection cable for the 6630 to link with my Road Angel GPS camera detector, which has a serial output, so in theory, if I can get a cable to link the two together, i'm in business...
I'm guessing at a standard serial PC > Nokia lead would do, but where are they???

Hey,
Cannot be done I'm afraid. This question has come up time & time again on various forums.
I think if I recall it's more viable on the Windows Smart Phones, but on series 60 it's not going to work.
Also if this was an option then the likes of TomTom would offer this route as a cheaper alternative.

You do not need any subsription so this software will never expire. In order to get it it to work you need a memory card. I currently use 256mb memory card as that is enough for me. A 128mb should work but then you will not have enough space to take pictures and store music. So its better to use a 256mb or higher. You also need the nokia pc suite software and a usb data cable which connects from your phone to the pc. You also need a gps receiver which you could buy on the internet. I bought mine from ebay for £31.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BUY IT PLZ EMAIL ME AT
mayurpat@tiscali.co.uk
From then i will reply back asap. THanks

nottmbantam 04-08-2006, 11:54 PM I've just installed TT ver 5.2 on my 6680. Already had a 512mb card, so bought the software off Ebay ( £3.50) and then bought a GPS Receiver ( £36 - Ebay) and it works perfectly.
Have also installed in onto my friends N70 who was so impressed with TT , he wanted it as well.
