View Full Version : Selective Backups -- BIG post!

I tried to find *clean* answers to this but couldn't. AND I know that this place has the guys to solve it /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif.
I think these questions would be excellent stuff for Rafe's userguide project, Rafe?
Also, when answering can u pleaaaaaaase /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif specify which question u r answering (Like Q1 = A1)?
So, here are my SELECTIVE backup questions
Q1. I wanna backup my contacts that are VERY customized, with groups, personal ringing tones, different fields, SPEED DIALS, etc. Which EXACT files should I backup and restore for this ALONE?
Q2. I wanna backup my SMS msgs that r VERY customized, with folders and many subfolders, some msgs in the INBOX, OUTBOX and my own folders. Which EXACT files should I backup and restore for this ALONE?
Q3. I wanna backup my profiles alone. How?
Q4. I wanna backup my calender alone. How?
Q5. I wanna backup my Desk notes ALONE. How?
Q6. Can I backup my LOG? If yes, how?

look at <!-- BBCode auto-link start -->http//www.aikon.ch/tipps/daten.htm<!-- BBCode auto-link end --> for Question Q1-Q6../phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif
In the Future a tool will backup/restore these files......
Manually you can not all files recover, you need tricks for recovering Contacts....

Please accept my apologies for the rather breif nature of these replies. I'm a bit busy at the moment.
1. To back up your contacts you should back up (i.e. copy C\System\Data\Contacts.cdb). You can't do selective backups with PC Suite, but you could do this manually. I dont suppose a program for this sort of thing will be that long in coming. As a secondaty tip you can also export your contacts from the program. Basically to restore you would copy this file back. This has worked for me on ER5, so I assume its OK on the 9210.
2. To back up (and replace as above)various elements of SMS
C\System\Data\smssegst.dat - SMS For list of sent messages
C\System\Data\smsreast.dat SMS List of the received messages
D\System\Mail \ *. * (all files). I think this may do e-mails as well, without having a 9210 myslef I can't investigate further.
C\System\Schedules\Schedules.dat may also be important because its to do with sending schedule. Dont know about this one though. Its listed as a possible in my notes.
3. Files for profiles are
C\System\Data\dbProfile.db Profile Database
C\System\Data\syssnd.dat Resource files / ini for Profiles.
Aside from the actual Agenda file (whereever you store this C\Communicator\Agenda?)
Preferences are stored in C\System\apps\Agenda\Agenda.ini
(and thats true for all apps excpet apprpriate folder)
5. I'm not entiely sure (I'll check the emulator later), but likely to be a file in the Notes System folder.
6. Its it C\System\Data and I think it called log.dat or log(something).dat. Have a look.
Sorry its a bit incomplete. First rough entry for the manual.
Just had a look at Colins page - it covers it very well. If still having problems look there.
Backup your 9210 with file manager to MMC and restore only those files you need/want to (look Rafe's post) from your backup folder.
Sometimes Contacts is in use, so you have to shutdown Tel application to replace it (killing it works fine with my 9210)

Guys, guys, guys! This is nice! Thank u all 4 ur help.
Now, Rafe, Colin's look complete and nice but it is in German and, as i said, Google doesn't do it for me. So, back to the Q's
1. R u saying that Contacts.cdb is the only guy?
2. Thank u, i'll try this, it looks complete.
3. Here too.
4. Here too.
JeP, I like that! But other than speed, why should i backup to MMC instead of PC?
Guys, I'd like to thank u all again. Let's hope that this thread will go on to be a complete reference in backing up this stuff.
First, yes contact.cdb is the only one. I cant check this, but I almost 100% certain
The only reason you might back up to MMC is speed and convience of having the data there. MMC is very stable, your unlikely to damage it. The reason not to back up to it is if your 9210 gets stolen you lose it.
My recommendation - you do both.
